Characters, Plot, and Themes / Guardian blood-line.

An excellent point.  The farther back in time they go, the more people they are likely to be related to... (i feel like an idiot for not realizing that sooner myself.)

So basically the entire point of who's related to who backward in time is moot, and there is nothing to be gained from looking any further into the ending where Lucca brings together a sampling of Nadia's ancestors.

I'm sorry as I may be missing something obvious, but what in the game indicates to Marle/Nadia that Ayla is her ancestor?  Is she just saying that with no indication of it being true, or does she have good reason to think that Ayla in fact IS her distant ancestor?  Couldn't it just as well have been anybody at all in 65000000BC?

I always thought she said that because it was assumed that pretty much whoever owned had the dreamstone in a time period was in some way related to Nadia.

fxar99: thanks for pointing out that discussion on Nadia's Bloodline - I completely hadn't seen that.  Sorry about posting a new thread about it, especially as the other one was so recent...

I had actually read the article about Nu, but I felt it was missing a few things.  Perhaps they were trivial, but I wanted to be thorough on the subject.

I did play CC when it came out, however I'm one of the idiots who didn't get it as a sequal (I understand much better now, though not yet completely).  Sadly, at this point, I can't remember a single cat reference in CC, but I believe you when you say there were many obvious ones.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Broken map / racing Johnny
« on: February 12, 2006, 03:30:31 am »
FIRST: One character in the programmer’s ending mentions: It'll cost you 10,000,000G to fix a broken map!  Has anyone ever determined if this is for real?

SECOND: I always thought I’d get something cool if I got a ‘perfect’ score racing Johnny.  I ‘rode’ him the entire race and broke 2100, but didn’t get anything for it.  Did I miss it by just a little or is there no point to getting a really really high score?

I just found this site recently and I really like some of the work that’s been done.  I am a long-time fan of CT, but it’s been a long time since I played.  However back when the game came out for SNES I played the hell out of it and I kept notes on my theories.  After reading some of the articles here I feel I would like to put in my two cents on several topics.  Some of it may be obvious, some of it may be new.  Hopefully it sheds a slightly different light on things.  If any of this is off topic for this forum, I apologize in advance.

--------------------------------
NADIA’S LINE

I always thought Ayla was the original ancestor (queen / tribe leader in 65000000BC possessing dreamstone).  Her descendants were Queen Zeal (what IS her real name?) and Schala (queen and princess respectively in 12000BC possessing pendant / mammon machine / dreamstone).  Schala’s descendants started the Guardia line and included Queen Leene (who had the pendant), Aliza (who had the pendant), and Nadia (who of course has the pendant).  How Schala managed to have children I do not know, unless they belong to Janus.  Janus has -A- pendant given to him by Schala, but it isn’t -THE- pendant…

Ayla -> Queen Zeal / Schala / Janus -> Leene -> Aliza -> Nadia

Also, I always thought the ending showed Ayla and Kino having a rather adult relationship, so Kino is my guess at Ayla’s partner in starting the line.

Examine this dialog, from one of the endings:

     Marle: You're all leaving?
Ayla: Crono was strong!  Marle too!  Ayla have fun!!
Marle: You're my distant ancestor. So you'd better have tough kids or
               I'll be in trouble!
KINO: Heh, heh!  No worry.  Ayla VERY strong!
     Marle: Right!
Marle: Hey...what do you mean by that?
Ayla: Kino dummie!  We go now!

Also, from earlier in the game, Ayla says: Kino is man... so if Ayla
   die, Kino chief then.

The ancenstral line above has a representative in every time period playable in the game except for 2300AD, but I'm not sure that matters much.

NU

I know a lot of people seem quick to dismiss the Nu as being a whole lot of interesting things that add up to nothing special, but I feel I need to say a bit more on the subject.

I have long believed that Nu is the Entity.  There seem to be a few holes in this theory, but also some strong points.  The Nu is certainly a recurring and almost central character to the entire story, even though it never really has the focus.

Descriptions of the Entity include:

   Wanted to relive its past

When people die, elders say, see whole life pass by!

mortals do relive their most profound memories before death
        claimeth them

Lavos playeth an integral role in the fortunes of this Entity

It is unknown, whose memories these are. It may be something
        beyond our comprehension.

Our journey may come to an end when we finally discover the
        identity of the Entity

That last point is a little troubling.  The ONLY being I can think of right now that DOES fit that description is the Lavos core.  That seems a little silly to be the entity…

Other Nu factoids / inferences / theories:

Nu exists in all time periods.  It has its own thoughts and memories, and it stores the data / memories of others.  Nu almost seems to be some creature that has characteristics of both a normal living thing and a robot / machine.

All life begins and ends with Nu – it seems to be both the lowest and highest form of life.  It has a primordial look and exists in 65000000 BC, yet Spekkio in his highest form appears as a Nu.  It is a servant to Belthazar, and maybe a servant to all life – charm Nu for mop (think janitor, cleaning up the messes of others).  Nu is also a guardian, a merchant, a philosopher, a warrior, a philanthropist (sometimes gives party stuff for free), and a ‘namer’.  Also Nu has the ‘third eye’ item (but so does Nizbel – took it from a Nu?), which in philosophical terms is very advanced (I had been reading on this site or another about links to Indian culture in both CT and CC).

Nu also hates liars, loves pranks, and loves to be scratched.

The Nu in 1000AD also exists in 12000BC (13,000 years was a long time.  Belthasar, I shall see you shortly...).  Since this Nu disappears, he may also be the one in 2300AD.  He probably doesn’t die here in 1000AD, as the Nu in 2300AD doesn’t disappear when it gets switched off.

SOME FINAL ODDITIES:

STRANGE CREATURE: The professor's programming was, in a sense,
his own eulogy.  Soon, I, too, will be able to sleep forever.  But
first...There is one thing I must do.
     ......
     ......
     ......
Program error...my memory banks have failed...

     ----------------------------

STRANGE CREATURE: Scared you, didn't I?
     It's me......BELTHASAR
I copied my memory into this thing.
     What do you think?

So in summary – I have no idea if Nu is the entity or not, but there is SOME evidence for it, just not air-tight evidence.
----------------------------

CAT THEME

There certainly seems to be a ‘cat’ theme in the game – Crono’s cat, Bekkler’s cats and cat food, Alfador, GATO, Catalack, the little girl’s cat at the fair, etc

Interestingly, Ayla has a ‘tail’ (okay so it’s not a real tail…), and Nu loves to be scratched.  Of course, in both cases, the same could be said of a lot of other animals.

When CHASING Nu in the 600AD forest, he says: stop it you dog – the only other dog reference of the game is when frog says it of Dalton.
------------------

XR-RX / RX-XR

Tata says: My next goal is to command the Super Legendary Space Ship, XR-RX!

I always thought this was the epoch…

Then there’s the other one:
RX-XR: Greetings, lifeforms!
I am Rx-xR, the Log Keeper.
I'll record your 3 fastest times.

I believe this is just an interesting, but pointless sound-alike name having nothing to do with anything.  Just thought I'd call attention to it because it's interesting.
------------------

CHARACTER NAMES

I also became obsessed with alternate / real character names for a while.  For example, the obvious ones:
Frog – Glenn
Marle – Nadia
Magus – Janus
Robo – R66-Y

But then I could never find alternate names for the other three characters Crono, Ayla, and Lucca.

Taban’s counterpart in 600 AD is Banta, but it doesn’t make sense for Lucca to be called Caluc in 1000 AD.  I experimented with the idea of Crono as Nu, but I have no evidence whatsoever of this connection.  I really couldn’t even guess a name for Ayla.  I doubt there really are alternative names for EVERY character, but if somebody can figure out some more it'd be cool.
