Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Most useless character(s)?
« on: April 15, 2006, 04:24:47 pm »
I agree with most of those, but Riddel? She is quite possibly the second most powerful magic user in the game, right behind Razzly.
I don't see why Grobyc keeps making these lists. He is highly overrated, but his stats are just unexpected: good defense and HP, very little attack or magic power. He is not what you would expect from a living weapon, but there are far worse characters.
Story-wise, Funguy really is most useless. It seems like they planned more for him that was completely missing. He never even manned up to Lisa! Maybe the choice to return to human or not could have been up to the player and determined his Lvl 7 attack or something. It would have been good if he could have warned his other self rather than just seeing him in agony.
I guess there were infinitely many missed opportunities for all of the characters. I'd love for them to make a remake with all of the stuff they wanted to put into the game in (they could have worked in Guile=Magus...just make the third path into Viper Manor some other useless character, and make the Magus plot play out throughout the game (but only make Magus playable near the end)). It would be great to see a "Director's Cut." I'd hope for a FFVI remake long before a Chrono Cross remake, though.

Going OT back to Blue Magic: While I have not been a fan of it in most games, Gau rocked in FFVI. You couldn't control him, but most fights are repetition anyway. He was the most versatile character in the game other than Gogo (who could also use Rage if given to one of his command slots), with a Rage for every situation. Once he got the NightShade Rage he was absolutely broken, though.
NeoFio is possibly the most worthless character in Chrono Cross. Turnip is very similar to her, but seems to defy his own stats (are they really his stats?). He also could equip a Stamina Belt and a Slasher to become a very usable character. I don't know what you could do to NeoFio to offset her case of horrible. She gets my vote. Luccia may be a close second.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Interesting Criosphinx strategy
« on: March 24, 2006, 03:19:25 am »
Well, the key to this is you never once get hit by ThundaStorm, only Earthquake and the physical attacks. Yeah, most of the damage you do will be from physical attacks. Personally, I would not use Pierre for the battle. Select characters based on their grids, their HP/M.DEF, their HP/DEF, and their Magic. Magic determines the strength of spells like HealAll, so a character is useless if a single casting cannot heal enough to prep characters for the next Earthquake. HP/M.DEF will determine how well characters take the Earthquakes, and HP/DEF will determine how well characters take getting hit physically. Pierre ends up with great stats from the hero effect, but not a great grid.
On a side note, TurnGreen always misses the Criosphinx. It is a shame.
Also, I was trying something a little different and the Criosphinx stopped his barrage when two characters were still alive...I wonder if only one needs to die. If so, that step 2 will be a whole lot easier.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Interesting Criosphinx strategy
« on: March 23, 2006, 11:31:34 pm »
I've hated the Yellow Plate method to defeat the Criosphinx, and I was determined to beat the Criosphinx using only items that could be obtained from stealing from common enemies, forging from common materials, and purchasing from shops. Here is what I ended up using:
Star level: 32
Lynx
Stone Swallow, Stone Mail, Yellow Brooch, Mythril Helmet, Silver Pendant
Lvl1: Revivex3, Cure
Lvl2: Heal
Lvl3: CurePlus, RecoverAll
Lvl4: HealAll
Lvl5: ||Earthquakex5, Carnivore
Lvl6: ||ThundaStormx10
Lvl7: Carnivore
Fargo
Stone Sword, Stone Mail, Yellow Brooch, Stone Helmet, Silver Pendant
Lvl1: Cure
Lvl2: Heal
Lvl3: CurePlus, RecoverAll
Lvl4: HealAll
Lvl5: ||Earthquakex5, CureAll
Lvl6: ||ThundaStormx10
Lvl7: Carnivore
Marcy
Granite Glove, Stone Mail, Yellow Brooch, Mythril Helmet, Silver Pendant
Lvl1: Cure
Lvl2: Heal
Lvl3: CurePlus, Recoverall
Lvl4: HealAll
Lvl5: ||Earthquakex5, CureAll
Lvl6: ||ThundaStormx10
Lvl7: Carnivore
Note that these characters were also not very "trained up." Fargo and Marcy had only been available since 29 stars. I had been avoiding quite a few battles, so Lynx was definitely not trained to his whole potential (had around 430 HP).
Anyway, the strategy has five simple steps:
(0. Steal the Rainbow Shell)
1. Let two characters die
2. Get them back alive
3. Trap ThundaStorm, Earthquake, and ThundaStorm in that order
4. Heal
5. Repeat steps 3-5 until the Criosphinx is defeated.
The first step is important. Around 8 stamina points into the fight, the Criosphinx will continue to cast Earthquake->ThundaStorm in a cycle until 0-1 characters are left standing. In fact, if you go in with multiple Yellow Plates an infinite loop occurs! To cause the least hurt, go in with the two characters that have no Revives with only 1 HP. The first Earthquake will kill the two, and the barrage will end (you will then see ThundaStorm->Earthquake->ThundaStorm flash in the corner for some glitchy reason, but the spells are never actually cast).
The second step is the hardest. You must now get your team back on their feet with enough HP to survive Earthquake (not to mention the two sets of physical attacks of the Criosphinx). Additionally, you need to set up the ThundaStorm trap. I don't remember the specific number of attacks I used to build up the element levels in the process, but there were a few stamina points to spare before ThundaStorm was cast.
The third and fourth steps are simple repetition. Just like 50% of the enemies in the game, the Criosphinx follows an extremely rigid cycle of moves (the other 50% are reactive, like the Marbule Sage and Dario). The sphinx moves once every 8 stamina points or so. Here is the exact pattern from the moment his initial barrage ends:
A single attack
Two attacks on a single character
ThundaStorm
Earthquake
Earthquake->ThundaStorm
Three attacks on a single character
So once Thundastorm is trapped, set the Earthquake trap. Once Earthquake is trapped, set a ThundaStorm trap. After ThundaStorm is trapped, have a character use HealAll, CureAll, or some other alternative. As soon as it looks like all characters will survive an Earthquake, you should set the next ThundaStorm trap. If the trap is set AND all characters would survive an Earthquake (this happens occasionally throughout the fight), tap into the Carnivores and the character-specific techs. Otherwise, just clean up with the CurePlus, Heals, and Cures.
By the end of the fight I had trapped 7 Earthquakes and 14 ThundaStorms. I never had to tap into that third Revive, and I had several HealAlls left. I never even used the CureAlls.
Now, I did this in a fairly minimal way on purpose. If you have things like Gold Pendant, Momento Pendant, Yellow Plate, Mastermune, Moonglasses, Defender, Defender Plus, Prism equipment, FullRevival, HolyHealing, etc., use them along with this strategy to make the fight much easier. Additionally, I would assume that filling the level 1 spot with TurnGreen and getting rid of the Green healing magic with more white and blue would probably make the fight go even more smoothly. Also, Carnivore is not the right answer in that case. Just like Dario, this fight is really simple and repetitive if you have a plan. Well, I hope this helped somebody.
One more odd thing: Has anybody noticed that the Criosphinx sometimes admits defeat after it makes a move, not after getting hit by you? I've also heard argument over how much HP it actually takes to beat it, some saying that the strategy guides list a lower HP than it actually takes. Is it possible that the Criosphinx has some sort of a timer (possibly stamina based) to decide when it is defeated?

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Missed opportunities in CC
« on: March 15, 2006, 10:11:40 pm »
I remember during my first playthrough, I believed that almost every character with a portrait was going to join the team. It usually turned out to be true, especially if they also had battle models. These were the characters I was most disappointed about:
Sage of Marbule: Sure, he was not exactly excited about your quest, but characters joined the group with less motivation. While he certainly lacked his own Techs, he made up for it by fighting you with a mop. He seemed to be designed to join the team.
Fire Dragon: Really early in the game, the dragons seemed to be the good guys. It seemed very plausible that he would come into the team, and his weapon was really cool.
Dario: Who didn't think that after that battle he was going to join you and complete your little Deva collection? Too out of shape? Somehow I doubt that. His stance was an obvious reference to Frog, too.
So, who would you have liked to join the team the most?

Sprigg is exactly the opposite: way too useful. I hate playing with her because she is ridiculously cheap. She starts with Lagoonate, which can deal like 100 damage with standard attacks at a point in the game when 100 for a critical is fairly rare. Before fighting the Marbule Sage, she can already have Total Chaos, Witchetty, Taurminator, Cybot, Fossicker, Yellow Belly, Puffy, Gurgoyle, and possibly a Rockroach. Most of those are even more powerful than Lagoonate. After the Dead Sea, Sidesteppa shows up in the Bend of Time. In the fight with Hell's Cook, Sprigg's attacks did 300 damage when not critical, and the "Jump Start" tech did 700 damage. To compare, Lynx was dealing 300 on a critical with a Stone Swallow during the battle.
I'm sure most of the other characters' skills surpass her Dopplegangs on NG+ (the Mystic Knights definitely keep up), but for most of the game she is by far the strongest character. Her only downfall is her low HP.
Story-wise she is pretty useless, but she definitely makes up for it in battle.

It is purposely cryptic. We won't know anything for sure at least until a third Chrono game, if ever. If you want to read the theories, then the FAQs are your only answer:

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Bronzerang?
« on: March 11, 2006, 01:38:40 am »
Thank you. That is exactly what I wanted to hear.
On the "punishment" characters path, Mel can join the team anytime Kid is in your party after Korcha gives you the boat. That means on that path, you could obtain her before any other character that begins with Iron equipment (except Skelly, which becomes available at the same time). In fact, this is earlier than you can obtain Pip on that path, and he begins with Bronze equipment.
Personally, I don't find the path "punishment." Korcha and Mel are not good, but Razzly has excellent magic power from the beginning. The only downside is that you don't get Glenn, which I will admit is a major downside.
I question whether Double Take does what is indicated. The success rate of Pilfer/Pillage/Snatch/Double Take seems to be related to the character's hit probability. If you want to succeed at stealing 99% of the time, always connect with a medium (2) hit immediately before performing the move. The enemies can move between the hit and the steal as long as the character is not targetted in the process (if the character runs back up to the enemy to continue a string of attacks you are good to go). I've done it this way my last time through the game, and I've only seen Pilfer miss once, and I have never seen Pillage or Snatch miss. The funny thing is this works for Double Take, too. Just make sure the character that uses the command smacked the opponent a few times before using it. Typically, I start a fight like this: Thief does light (1) hit, thief does medium (2) hit, thief steals. If the character gets targetted in the proceess, I try to hit with the medium hit again before attempting the steal. As I said, it works 99% of the time. I'd even assume that the Ninety-Nine Element would work as well, but it is not as fast unless you use several pieces of Dreamer's equipment.
I *believe* Double Take increases the probability of getting rare steals, since I almost never see rare steals unless I use Double Take. It definitely doesn't have much of an impact on success rates since it seems to miss just as often without getting hits prior to using it.
Once again, thank you for putting my mind at ease. I doubted that I missed the Bronzerang, but I wanted to be sure.

Hell, regarding her initial weapon, for how late in the game you get her, she should be either starting with a Silverang or Rockerang.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Bronzerang?
« on: March 09, 2006, 07:59:33 pm »
Is it possible to acquire the Bronzerang without a Gameshark? It is listed as Mel's initial equipment, but she always joins the team with a Steelerang. Does this belong in the same category as Bone Shot and Ghetz's Shirt?
Perhaps the plan was originally to be able to acquire Mel a bit earlier in the game, so they felt she should have a weaker weapon as her initial equipment. If you look in the script, there is no text for her to join the team without having Kid talk to her. However, she has dialogue for Opassa Beach even though it is impossible to get her before you go through the temporal distortion:
Mel:
Where angels lose their way...?
Does this beach have
anything to do with it?
Mel:
Hurry, Serge.!
We don't have time for
a stroll on the beach!
C'mon, I promise
I'll do my best!
This is marked as valid in the game script, but it should probably be in the [Lost / Unused Lines] section since it should never occur through normal gameplay. There is not text for any other character that should not be present, and there is not even dialogue for all characters that could be present (covered by dialogue for "Member"). So, they went out of their way to put in text for her that went unused. Sorry that I got a little OT there.
Well, thank you in advance if you have the answer.
