Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Re: Formulas & statistics

Well if there's any interest, I started collecting data for all the triple techs as I'm playing through. Unfortunately since I wasn't going out of my way to avoid enemies, the lowest levels I'll have data for some of the triple techs will be in the 50s, but from a range of 50 to ** that should be enough data to come up with good formulations.
I think my primary interest is in seeing what the best party to have at any given time is for the sake of damage per turn - i.e. a triple tech is only as good as a single tech if it results in three times as much damage. I'm wondering if the best party is Crono+Lucca+Ayla casting Luminaire and the aforementioned Fire Whirl; in playing through just now (without going out of my way to encounter enemies but also not always going out of my way to avoid them) and giving all my magic tabs to Ayla, I was able to beat Giga Gaia in one combat round using that combo, and various other bosses a lot more quickly than I previously thought possible. Of couse this isn't that great against monsters that resist or counter fire or lightning, but it's not often that you encounter that and usually a physical attack will dispel it.

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Re: More Cross ruminations

I'm a big fan of Chrono Trigger who was overall disappointed by ChronoCross, but not because I thought CC was a bad game. I agree with most of the balanced criticisms offered in this thread about the too many shallow characters, condensed plot-on-a-beach, etc., (I actually enjoyed the battle system in CC actually though) but I think my primary disappointment lies in something that has not been stated here: the mood of the entire game as a whole.
Chrono Trigger was lighthearted, not too serious, but at the same time very moving and deep. If I had to compare it to anything, I think the best thing I can think of is the Chronicles of Narnia, in which there is explanations given for the mechanics of what's going on (in the real world and Narnia) but it's not scientific, not systematic, and it's left to the reader or player to accept to suspend their disbelief and partake in the fantasy or not. If you do, you are given an amazing journey with rich themes and an epic sweep of a story. Chrono Cross ruined that feel to me; it tried too hard to appeal to a more "hard sci-fi" sort of atmosphere of a more rigorously defined plot with nuances fleshed out with fake physics and all. Add to that the seriousness of the majority of the characters and the philosophical discourses despite the fact that I really did not care about them. Take for instance, the female friend of Serge near the beginning of the game - I forgot her name because it's been a few years now - she REALLY got on my nerves! CT's characters I felt were much more fun and whimsical. I didn't think that the plot was too hard to understand on my first playthrough actually - I just read over the Condensed Plot article on this site and remembered it all quite easily, and recalled the fact that I had gotten it as I played it, but the fact that so many people need to have it detailed for them and the fact that people need to speculate on the various details so much is a major detractor to me. With the introduction of CC's plot, it ceases to be a magical story of legend and instead becomes like some sci-fi series. That may be fine if that's the sort of thing you like; the only reason I care is because it's a Chrono game, and I was hoping for the same style of story, even though I was fine with changing the hero and cast of characters, fine with the battle system, fine with most of the changes that other CT fans often gripe at. I like innovation and for the innovation that was done with CC, I am glad - but even innovation aside, it still feels like a different game because of the style I'm talking about.

Hi,
I just stumbled on this site a few days ago as I'm replaying CT for the umpteenth time. I was curious on the work that has been done to discover the game mechanics and formulas for how damage is calculated, particularly techs. I think the last time I played through, maybe 4 years ago, I found some surprising combos after I had maxed ** stats on all characters - for instance, Ayla and Lucca's Fire Whirl did a lot more damage than I expected, because I realized it was based on Ayla's magic stat which is normally horribly low. I notice that the Game Mechanics FAQ on GameFAQs has some more info on it than it did back then, but it still does not cover everything. Is there anything on this site that does, or has there been any organized attempt to collect this information here? I've been looking through but it seems this site is more concerned with theorizing story related aspects of the game and has little new gameplay information content. If there are others here who are interested in collecting this information for the site, I would be willing to help in collecting data possibly, but I wouldn't be able to lead the effort due to lack of time on my part.
