Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Some basic Chrono Cross questions

Well, I just bought Chrono Cross at a Game X Change store about a week or two ago, along with FF Chronicles, (To get into the Chrono series) and while I just attained every ending in CT, (Pats self on back 
) naturally I move on to the sequel.
While, the point is, I'm a little confused. I get most of the battle system, the stamina, element levels, and the grid at least, but what I've heard I could use my challenge stars (Is that right? o.O) for battle. How so can I do this?
Also, I just met Fargo, and completed the haunted ship scenario, but can I get Glenn? I, uhh, accidently looked at a few faqs and it seems like I won't be able to obtain alot of the characters. So, 17 hours into the game, should I start over? I'd like to get as many characters I can. (Just to see if I can find any interesting members, plus I WANT AN ARMY!!!)
Anyways, this involves refusing Kidd's help right? So, again, should I just restart the game? I'm sorry about all the questions, I think I'm liking this one better then CT so far. xD

Has anyone ever read any of the Earth's Children saga?
If you have, you might notice that the main characters name was Ayla. Another funny thing is that the book is in the Ice Age. I know, I know, Ayla in Chrono Trigger is from the Prehistoric Age, but there both pretty close aren't they? (Kind of...)
So, what I'm getting at, is it posible that their related in some way? In terms of name and character? (Again, kind of...)
