Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Chrono Cross is a Lovecraftian RPG
« on: September 20, 2007, 10:42:59 pm »
Chrono Cross is perhaps the most depressing game I have ever played.

The more I play Chrono Cross, the more depressing the story gets.  First I learn that I'm just a pawn in a Lovecraftian game between the Dragon God and FATE, and then I learn that they themselves are mere pawns in an even more Lovecraftian game between Belthasar and the Time Devourer.

My head hurts.  And the vague ending makes my head hurt even more.

Anyway, while I'm at it, are there any Playstation RPGs that you guys recommend?

I don't want a new Chrono Trigger game. Yuji Horii also stated that he doesn't want one either anyway. I want a new Chrono game.
Must we split hairs over semantics?  You know exactly what I'm talking about; another Chrono game.  For all intents and purposes, Chrono Cross is Chrono Trigger 2, and the next game will be Chrono Trigger 3.

Anyway, I'd like a game set in the newly-created Ideal Timeline.  Perhaps the time travelers of this timeline would eventually band together to protect it?  The new Chrono game could borrow the concept of the Temporal Prime Directive from Star Trek, perhaps even the Temporal Cold War or something.

Has the OP been banned already?  Most of his/her/its posts are spam.

In before lock. ;D

It would be nice if Chrono Trigger 3 had a journal that recorded vital information that you, the player, might forget.  One of the biggest problems of Chrono Cross is figuring out what to do next.  Too many times have I asked myself, "WTF do I do next?"

Or, instead of a journal, perhaps Gaspar could play the role of the Wise Old Man again?  Gaspar was quite useful in Chrono Trigger by giving the player hints on what to do next.  Belthasar could've played this role in Chrono Cross, but oddly, he didn't, leading me to ask "WTF do I do next?" one too many times.

What do you think?

I guess it's my turn to reply to this topic...

Chrono Trigger is virtually flawless, but if I had to pick a flaw, it would be its size.  There is a lot of unused space on the many world maps that could've been filled with minor cities, dungeons, etc.

In terms of gameplay, Chrono Cross is excellent.

In terms of plot, Chrono Cross fails miserably.  The plot is confusing and incredibly complicated.  The lack of a journal (common in RPGs nowadays) makes it difficult to understand the story because by the time new information is revealed, the past event that it applies to has long been forgotten.

Despite their flaws, I like the two games a lot.  In the end, playing a game is all about having fun.
