Characters, Plot, and Themes / Kid/Schala
« on: March 01, 2005, 09:25:55 pm »
Are we sure Kid doesn't merge with Schala? If Kid's in the party at the end she doesn't say anything when the third party member speaks. Even if they're from Another World they say something to Serge, so where's kid? If two timelines merge surely two eighteen year old girls can mind meld. God, the sounds wierd, but you get my point. Seriously, what do you guys think?

Magic, Elements, and Technology / Magic in CT and CC

Darmani:
I never thought of it that way. Cool.
As for Zeal, I always thought of her as the original Arbiter and very likely what Serge would have ended up like. Several fanfics I've read have suggested an Anakin Skywalker-like descent into darkness for CC's protagonist. I think Zeal was greedy but sane up until Lavos destroyed the Ocean Palace and the Space Bug chose her to safeguard against the Entity and the heroes, corrupting her like your drug analogy. A little off-topic, sorry.

I think Spekkio really denied Ayla not because Ayla was too unadvanced as a person or biologically but to protect the timeline.

General Discussion / Chrono Spinoff Games, Series, etc.

Yikes. Didn't think I'd start a thread that would be so heated. For the remake I agree that extra characters would be a bit much, though I was thinking of side missions starring secondary characters. Any extra endings would be to fill in a little more bertween the games. As for which system it would be on, either wouild be good but I kinda like the touch pad myslf and having the battle menus on the bottom one would eliminate the flipping of the menu. It would be less of a remake than a revival.
The animated movie I' m thinking of wouild be backstory focusing on the future where Chronopolisa is built, the present defeat of Guardia, and the Time Crash in the past. Cramming Chrono Trigger into a two-hour OVA would be a crime.

A PS2 game would be nice...Maybe explore where Lavos originally came from...Possibly other worlds...Other times in other worlds...Maybe Breath of Fire it and just use similar characters only on different worlds dealing with other Lavoses...Quote
That is freakin' awesome! The only problem I would see would be that ity could be a retread of CT unless the time distortions of Lavos were handled differently, maybe splitting the alien world into two like Metroid Prime Echoes of Sudeki (Ithink.Haven't played it.) or some other plot device. Think of the character designs of the alien race of the characters: totally original yet still part of the Chrono Universe. I smell a cameo by Starky's race...
Thanks for your responses on this thread. I'm alittle late to respond but I'll try to stay part of the discussion.

History, Locations, and Artifacts / The Frozen Flame
« on: December 09, 2004, 07:29:05 pm »
I've always thought of Lavos as a manufactured being, a bioweapon made by some ancient alien civilization. In this line of thinking, couldn't the Frozen Flame be some sort of fail-safe, (Promemtheus circuit) designed in case Lavos went rogue? By evolving humanity, the Flame could have prepared a countermeasure (humans) to defeat Lavos. Maybe that's why the Time Devourer needed the Flame from Chronopolis so it could reach full power by harnessing the evolution protocols to evolve and destroy the universe.
Though Lavos uses the DNA of humanity to create the ultimate being, it doesn't really use humans much in the Lavos Timeline. Mostly they seem to get in the way (Zeal, Crono, Serge) because the long term goals of humanity and Lavos do not coincide, to say the least. Humans may be altered by Lavos (the Flame) but there is no paternal warmth on the space bug's part. Queen Zeal may have chosen by Lavos (an Arbiter?) to safeguard against the Planet by foiling Chrono's team
In closing the Flame is still part of Lavos and by no means a conscience, but it may be a component similar to the Prometheus circuit, a neutral entity designed to prevent Lavos creating his ultimate being. As GrayLensman said, the Flame may be what allowed humanity to defeat Lavos. Note that all the party members in the first game were all human or created by humans and humans were able to use magic after contact with the Flame. Ayla's people were the template the Flame used to create a Lavos antibody: modern man.
This is a pretty complicated theory for me so feel free to tell me how wrong I am.

General Discussion / Chrono Spinoff Games, Series, etc.
« on: December 09, 2004, 06:53:10 pm »
Square-Enix is giving mad love to FFVII lately through a number of spinoffs. They have a movie (Advent Children), a non-RPG PS2 game (Dirge of Cereberus) and a cell phone game in Japan featuring those loveable gestapos the Turks. How about giving some some spinoff love to the Chrono series? New games are on everybody's wishlist of course, but who here wouldn't want to see a CT or even CC anime?
The CT series could done in the style of the cutscenes in the PSX remake; having a look similar to Dragon Ball would only help it gain mainstream popularity. A fun series about time-travel could trigger a revival.
The second game would work well in the format of a 50-episode series and might give all the playable characters a chance to have their stories told. I imagine the look would mature somewhat and the content would be better suited for the Adult Swim block. A feature film would connect the two and be released after CC's run. As confusing as animes can be (ex. Neon Genesis Evangelion) putting CC in an episodic format could force the writers to clear up some plot points.
A CT remake for the PSP and the Nintendo DS (with a seperate screen for the inventories and menus) would look even better on these new platforms. Extra content that ties the game into Chrono Cross would it make worth the purchase; maybe even a new playable character and endings? And new games for these platforms would be easy to make compared to a full-fledged next-gen RPG. The time-periods, characters, and universe are full of potential spin-offs.
Lucca was in Xenogears; maybe Chrono characters could appear in a Kingdom Hearts game like the FF crew. Picture it: Sora, the main character of KH, enters an arena that is apparently empty. Suddenly a time gate appears and Chrono steps out of it. Then, the Arena turns black and Serge falls from above and lands next to him. That would be a cool fight with some X-Strikes and Double Luminaires. You could win a Rainbow Keyblade. Ayla and Leah on a dinosaur-themed world. Magus as a boss. Some characters like Poshul, Draggy, and Neo Fio already look like Disney creations and would fit in well.
Granted, the Chrono series isn't in the spotlight right now, but it's safe to say it is still remembered fondly. The Compendium is evidence of this, as are all the fansites on the web. Nintendo Power readers still send in fan art of the Chrono characters, twelve years after the game was released. My best friend is two years younger than me and had never heard of CT until he played the PSX remake. Chalk up one convert.
Any ideas for Chrono spinoffs? Game spin-offs? Merchandise or the like?

History, Locations, and Artifacts / Why does the Red Stone interact with Lavos so well?
« on: November 29, 2004, 02:52:29 pm »
XchrononetX:
I like that. Simple and to the point. Now to complicate things.
Has anyone noticed the red center of the teleporter in CC? I always thought that was Dreamstone. If Marle's pendant (a partially completed Time Egg) could warp a person through time using the teleporter, who's to say a device couldn't be built using the material it was made out of to warp between the two shattered dimensions? I'm probably way off base but i had to put it out there.

So, it's not really a connection with Lavos, but a connection with energy in general.

History, Locations, and Artifacts / Origin Of Acacia Dragoons

Zeality:
During the concert on the Zelbess Nikki's character (which I always assumed was his father Fargo) says he was betrayed and left by his allies. Could this be an account of Fargo (a Deva?) being left behind by Viper, thus causing Fargo's grudge against the general? It seemed really personal, like they were once tight. I think Nikki was seventeen, so this may predate the Dragoons' involvement in the Porre-Guardia war. Does this fit with Radius' statements?
Quote
Although I'm unawares as to how off topic this is, I got to thinking about the old four Devas...There was a topic over at GameFAQs that assumed that perhaps Fargo was the "missing" fourth member of the old version with Radius, Zappa, & Garai. I had thought that perhaps there were simply three at the time, until I played through the part where you come across Radius' burnt out hideout. During the following scene, Radius refers to himself as being a member of the former four Devas...
So that means that there WAS four members during his stay!

Ultimania states that the fourth Deva was Viper, but Ultimania gets really retarded at times, and isn't very credible.

History, Locations, and Artifacts / Rise Of Porre
« on: November 29, 2004, 12:59:46 pm »
Glad you're not mad, Chrono'99.
Thanks for that. When I played CC I was constantly looking for hints of CT, and I was strangely happy when Grobyc used his Rocket Punch on me. That's when the Robo-Porre Theory started for me.
Speaking of Grobyc, I noticed the earlier posts about the super-weapon in Chronopolis and I remembered the first time I found it. I always assumed it was an antique one of the staff owned, like a Civil War rifle. That would explain why Norris was shocked at its completion.
Other posts have speculated on the Masamune and its corruption, and I have another theory to present. Mind you, this isn't mine; I found it in an excellent fanfiction on Fanfiction.net by Demon-Fighter Ash and I make no claim to his stories or ideas. I happen to like his stories and have emailed him to beg for a continuation to his latest fic with no response. I recommend giving him a look-see for anybody interested in Chrono fics, and I'll try to keep it as spoiler-free as possible.
The cause of the corruption of the holy sword Masamune may be none other than Lynx. He suppresses Masa and Mune using the power of Fate and Lavos' unrestrained power corrupts the sword. This fits into the game and could explain why Lynx is so knowledgeable of the sword and able to wield it addter Karsh kills Dario. The last sentence is pure speculation on my part, but Ash's fics have similar themes to some of the articles at the compendium, (infinite Lavos, Fate's interference with Porre) meaning he may have skimmed the site or had similar ideas.
Again, the Lynx-Masamune Theory is Demon-fighter Ash's and not mine. I'd hate to be accused of stealing another fan's work, especially one whose writing I admire.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / About demi-humans and Mystics

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who would rather focus on topics like these due to the fact that theorizing on the nature of temporal mechanics and such is simply too much for some brains.Quote
I hear ya. Though I still believe that Mystics and demi-humans are not biologically related the term demi-human could describe the Mystics as having human-like characteristics. The time between CT and CC is a period of change; Guardia fell, Porre is the world's new power, and El Nido is the "hot spot". The term demi-human may be a new way of describing non-human species, a more PC term than "monster".
What we need to figure out is how long "demi-human" has been in use. Since the Crash? Since the Porre colonists arrived? I can't think of a date off the top of my head. None of the demi-humans give another name for their people to my knowledge.

Thanks, Oswego. I put a lot of thought into that that post and I'm glad you liked it. I'm surprised you're interested in the Flea theory but I liked your examples and thought I should share my own.
The particular theory that made me place the emoticon
was the thoought that Flea started out as a male human wizard and altered his appearance to that of a female because of his... feelings about being that way. Ostracized from the cruel masses that couldn't understand him, Flea was either discovered by Ozzie or Magus and taken into the Mystics. Out there I know, but it makes sense in the framework of the game. Magus is human, but powerful, and this makes Ozzie think twice about killing him (after he most likely fried the three imps Ozzie sicced on him.)
It seems likely Magus would have recruited Flea in this scenario, since he too was an outsider and maybe felt a small sympathy to the wizard. Not to mention Flea is tough, his spells included causing chaos amongst your party and using incredible illusions to disorient (turning his room into space.) These skills would have been invaluable in battle, as he could summon fake armies to confuse Guardia's forces and hide troop movements. I remember an NPC on the southern continent that mentions Flea and the others with a sense of dread. Also it is likely his appearance is just that, and he made no physical alterations to himself.
Before I get too off topic, this theory takes into consideration that the Mystics are similar to the Covenant in that they are an organization of non-human peoples with a common goal: the destruction of humanity. And Flea would likely feel great animosity towards mankind (no pun intended.) I'm not sure, but wasn't there another thread on Flea's origin? There's so many...
Alright, back on the thread. Thanks for telling me the locations of the Kilwala; I had forgotten about them. Also, you were right that the Kilwala in 65 Million B.C. would not attack unless provoked, maybe for disturbing their "mass" as it were. This may also indicate their level of intelligence since they don't politely ask party to come back later. If I recall, wouldn't they also attack if you engaged a group of dinos nearby? Just wondering, I need play my copy of CT again.
The woman who called Joe a monster didn't seem too hateful about it; she may have even been a friend (or girlfriend
) of Joe's who thought that Crono (a guy with a sword) would think Joe was dangerous. Joe might not even mind people calling him that; he probably knows that humans are quick to jump to conclusions and wouldn't take offense to it. I keep thinking of him as a Ray Charles, probably because of the movie. Bridging the gap between humanity and Kilwala... love conquers all... heh.
I've thought a little about demi-humans since then and I think the term is a label applied by the Porre colonists to describe the bipedal race native to El Nido. Most appear similar to human and I do believe the Mystics and demi-humans have little or no connection, except as a foil to the human race in both games. (There may have been covered in the Ultimania guide for CC.) True, the natives of Guldove did respect the demi-humans but I doubt they called them that before Porre arrived. Like with the girl and Joe, they called them demi-humans so that Serge and Crew would know what they were talking about.
I need to research more, but I hope to have some more concrete findings backed by the games and resource materials soon, as my memory is fauly ty at best. Also, Flea's origin and wizards after Zeal would make great topics on their own, if they aren't already. If Sneff and Guile are real wizards, what's the deal? I heard a theory that states that Magic is a recessive trait, so that could be an explanation. Still that's another topic.
This thread is especially interesting to me since I was born and raised in the South and recently did a school project on racism and the news media.
Plus, the axioms on time-travel make head go BOOM.

Couldn't the Unified Dimension count as another reality? I just can't see why she'd want to meet some other Serge she's never met and hook up with him. It kinda goes against the vibe I got from the ending that all lives are unique and important. The cinematics in the credits so seem to show Kid searching through a world like ours, so maybe I'm wrong.
Oh, and sorry about stealing your Robo Theory on the Rise of Porre thread. I looked for something similar before I posted, I swear.

Maybe Porre studied his circuits in order to start making their own robots? Also, in Keystone T-2, Porre might have been quite pissed off when they learnt the future prince of Guardia just popped in their sacred shrine and stole "their" Robo..."

Mystics were named "Mazoku" though (I think it means monsters or something like that) in the Japanese CT. That's also a name used in Dragon ball.
Don't know about the Japanese name, but I do remember Joe the piano man. "Monster" is a generic term in RPGs, as we all know, though one could read into the statement as a term describing a demographic like non-human sentients. "Demon" or "youkai" in the anime Inuyasha actually translates closer to nature spirits than the more negative connotations used in the English dub, as I've heard fans point out.
Monster makes demi-human sound better by far, but maybe Joe is an exception and other Kilwalas are anti-social and violent towards humans. We don't know. I'm not sure what year Joe was found in ( 1,000 A.D. I think, correct me if I'm wrong) or the appearances of the wild Kilwala in the game besides 65, 000, 000 B.C. There the little fuzzballs could be found dancing around a rock in a sort of ritual, so the species was apparently intelligent enough to recognize repetition of an action.
So Kilwalas, or at least the Family of Kilwalas, has been around since the times of the Reptites and early humanity. Whether they were sentient then or evolved to be we don't know, but the fact remains an intelligent species that has been around since the dinosaurs is (probably) lumped together in standard conversation with the Mystics that followed Magus, at least racially. There may not share genetic ancestry at all, but they do have one thing in common; they aren't human, the dominant race on the planet. No Kilwalas fought you in Medina in 1,000 A.D., and did anyone see the Kilwala Brigade stationed in Magus' Castle?
They were pretty tough. (Just kidding.)
I don't recall the term monster being used to describe demi-humans in CC, but I vaguely remember that the villagers in Arni may have called Serge (Lynx), Harle, and Sprigg that after his change (and even with Radius in the party! The chief may have whacked his buddy, but he was not intolerant.)
In short (too late for that, I guess) I submit that "monster" is probably a generic though not politically correct term for non-human, sentient creatures. "Demi-human" is similar, though more PC in its use. As for Mystics, I'm thinking of another example in gaming: the Covenant in the Halo games, a religious order of various alien races that also has a hatred of humanity.
Halo 2 rocks, BTW.

History, Locations, and Artifacts / Rise Of Porre
« on: November 10, 2004, 01:34:36 pm »
There's been a lot of talk about an industrial revolution happening in Porre and its jump in technology. It's implied that Lucca is behind part of this in the Burning Orphanage, but I think there may be another catalyst for the rise of Porre's military might.
Robo.
Now I know this was an optional quest in CT but bear with me. Leaving Robo at Fiona's for four hundred years had to really affect the timeline. After the forest is regrown and Robo is enshrined the church, the government of Porre could have "borrowed" the relic and studied it. That could explain the similarities in Grobyc's and Robo's abilities (rocket punch, lasers) and combined with androids like the Cybot from Fort Dragonia could explain the the leap in robotics Porre experienced.
This may mean that Porre was already changing into a military power during the events at the end of CT. Maybe that's why the Chrono Crew were staying in the woods (or maybe Robo was too heavy to move all the way to an Inn, I don't know.) Correction, they did have the Epoch so they may have stayed in the woods out of hostility to Guardians.
This idea was what prompted me to join the forums here, so let me know what you think.
Robo.
