Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Re: Once-King Dalton
« on: September 18, 2009, 02:12:28 pm »
From my interpretation, it seems that Schala teleported the party back to wherever they were before the dimensional vortices appeared and wiped their memory. In other words, they proceeded to defeat Lavos as normal and everything played out the way it did in Eclipse Magus's timeline (or not, if your Magus is dead...then Eclipse Magus would have to be from another dimension). Which means that the knowledge was more for the player's notice than the characters.

I mean, you can't compare two good games of two separate genres and call one better than the other.

Sure you can. That's how comparison works.

...the fuck? No, it isn't. Comparison only works when they're in the same genre.

Seriously, in which alternate reality would I be able to make a fair comparison between Chrono Trigger and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare? It's impossible.

Square has gone out of their way to shut down two fan-made projects revolving around Chrono Trigger, and for whatever reason they've yet to get the point that the Chrono series could be extremely profitable.

Even if CTDS sold poorly, there would be a legitimate reason for it. The game has been released twice already, and just look at their other games on the DS  (i.e. The World Ends With You, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Final Fantasy IV). Look at how much effort was put into those games as opposed to CTDS, which was just another port of a 16-bit game with a few more extras. How many copies did they expect to sell?

I hope someone at Square watches the videos of Crimson Echoes on Youtube and realizes, "Holy crap, these guys were so dedicated to our series that they managed to tell a story better than most games we've made in the past ten years. Maybe we should make a game like this. King Zeal is the FUCKING SHIT."

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Re: Explain Serge's Silence.
« on: June 11, 2009, 06:59:30 pm »
This Silent Protagonist shit has got to stop. I want to be able to relate to the character I'm playing as, which I can't fucking do if he never speaks. Crono is more understandable because Chrono Trigger was made in 1995, and the character was actually intended to represent the player. Crono was an average guy with no established past in the game because the player's backstory is irrelevant to the plot of the game. Though, as far as I'm concerned, Magus was the main character of Chrono Trigger. One way or another, everything revolved around him and he was easily the most complex and interesting character in the game. Frog came close even though his Shakespearean dialect brought my piss to a boil, and I thank God that it was fixed in CTDS.

But Serge, on the other hand, has one of the most well-established backgrounds of an RPG character, and yet he doesn't speak -- at all. First of all, what was the point in doing that if the character is given no development whatsoever? I'd really like to know how Serge felt when he found out the secrets of his past, or how he felt when he found out that the man he had pursued throughout the game and killed was his father. What a waste! Second, why didn't he speak? He spoke in Radical Dreamers, which I realize was a different game but our Serge was still based on the same character. Kid kept her stupid Australian accent, didn't she?

If there's another Chrono game I hope that the series gets with the times and gives us a character that will open his mouth. This shit will not fly in 2009.

Of course the sales were unimpressive. It was a re-re-release of the same fucking game we've been playing for almost fifteen years with minuscule differences. They give Final Fantasy IV a remake from the ground up even though no one wanted one, yet after shutting down Chrono Trigger Resurrection they give us another fucking port.

New ending? Great, but what the hell does it even mean?

I guess now, we'll never know.

Polling / Re: Who is better, Magil or Guile?
« on: April 09, 2009, 10:21:21 pm »
Regardless of what anyone says about amnesia or whatever, Magil actually is Magus. Guile isn't. He's an interesting character in his own right, but he doesn't really contribute much and in fact it's possible that most gamers completely skipped over him. Should they remake or port Cross, I expect Guile to be a mandatory, more fleshed-out character.

The other lines for that, from my text dump of the Japanese version:
Quote
{Lucca}: All my memories of {Crono} just
keep flashing by for some reason. Oh, {Crono}!
I can't take this. Can we leave?

{Ayla}: {CronoNick}...
{Ayla} head just think {Crono}.
No can stop!
Oh, no...

{Frog}: I...cannot be here.
All my memories of {Crono} keep rushing back.
It's too much to bear.
Let us go back.

{Robo}: We must go back. My memory banks are
becoming overloaded with memories of {Crono}.
I am afraid I may go haywire at this rate.

Magus doesn't say anything? Not even a "Hmph! I care nothing for my recollections of this fool" or something along those lines?

Maybe you missed it, but if you wanted a port there are like 4 other versions...And I didn't think anyone didn't like FFIVDS...I didn't get to play much of it, but thought it was great.

When I wrote that post I thought that a port would have been better, but I neglected the fact that there already was a port for Game Boy Advance. Nevertheless, I couldn't stand FFIVDS.

Regarding Dalton, I think it is very plausible that Crono and co. neglected to consider Dalton a real threat. Just think about it: throw everything you learned in Chrono Cross out the window, and forget about the Fall of Guardia cutscene for one moment. If you knew nothing about any of that while Dalton made that threat, you'd have shrugged it off just like the characters did.

Dalton: I'M GOING TO RAISE AN ARMY IN PORRE AND KILL YOU ALL!!!
Magus: lmao wtf is porre it sounds french
Frog: it is french that's why they didn't lift a finger in 600AD
Crono: yeah magus wtf how are they still alive
Magus: idk some faggot got in my way
Frog: who
Magus: you
Frog: oh
Magus: dunked
Frog: yeah my bad you should've killed them
Magus: it's not too late.....................
Crono: ok let's go bye dalton
Magus: crono why the fuck are you talking
Crono: i'm mute and useless
Magus: that's better
Frog: g2g
Dalton: God, I fucking hate Square-Enix.

I think we can officially kiss any possible chance of another CT sequel goodbye.

That's hard to compare since FFIV DS was FFIV's 4th or 5th (it was on Wonderswan too, wasn't it?) release, is part of a greatly more popular series, and was also a complete graphical remake, not just a port.

Which is sad because a port would've been better than that horrendous fucking abortion of a remake.

To quote the remade Cecil, WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?

General Discussion / Re: Video Game Discussion Thread

I don't really care about remakes as long as I get one of Gold and Silver some day.

That's what I thought Platinum was going to be. It would have made the most sense, but apparently it's the update to Diamond and Pearl. The fuck was the point?

Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Re: Best Party?

Magus is a fucking beast in CTDS with his new ultimate equipment and a Gold Stud. I just wish there was something that would make him deal critical hits a lot more frequently in situations where magic is useless (i.e. Dream Devourer's second phase), because the Dreamreaper easily makes his attacks stronger than Crono's when dealing critical damage, even without any damage boosts.

Are you seriously bitching about a font? You really need to sort out your priorities. It's not like it's in fucking Wingdings or some illegible shit. I personally prefer the CTDS font, but as long as I can read what's going on either way it's really not even worth discussing.

It makes sense. While Lavos didn't exactly merge with Queen Zeal, he still managed to influence her into becoming the dark harbinger of death in 12,000 B.C., so it's not far-fetched to believe that Lavos did the same thing to Schala before they became the Dream Devourer. Each member of the family has their own "dark side" which was more or less the result of Lavos's presence, whether direct or indirect.

What I'd like to know is, the Lavos that fused with Schala...was that a new Lavos spawn or the same Lavos that Magus and co. destroyed?

Robo = Alt+F4

I can't even begin to describe how fucking hard that made me laugh. Good show.
