General Discussion / Re: Goku's mother has been given a name

She had never been mentioned, period, prior to this. No name, no face, no backstory, nothing. This is all new information.

How many of you here suddenly think that Goku and Crono are at least half-brothers?

No more so than when I first saw the animated movie cut-scenes for Trigger. It's Toei's character recycling process at work again. It seems like they've only ever created about a dozen unique characters, and when they need more, they shuffle the names, body parts, and other attributes of those dozen around to make new ones, a la Mr. Potato Head.

General Discussion / Re: Are Games Crippled By Easy Modes?

What difficulty to play on? Take it easy and make your way through the story? Or play it on hard to truly challenge yourself?

It depends on the game, and how well I know the material. With titles that introduce new methods of playing, or a new structure; I'll start with one of the easier settings, and crank it up as I deem it necessary. It's like training wheels on a bicycle: once I get the hang of it, I'll ditch the hand-holding.

Afterwards, I'll try to strike a balance between outright difficulty and casual enjoyment. I like the game to pressure me just enough to keep me interested, but not so much that I hit an impasse because I'm repeating the same segment multiple times. Make me have to try for it, but don't put the goal on top of an unreachable pedestal.

I play on whatever settings allow me to have the most fun with it. With the vast number of genres, playstyles, mechanics, and whatnot, it's a case-by-case basis as to where that setting falls.

The garage is often the most taken for granted item in our home.

Personally, I say the refrigerator. But I don't have a garage in my home (chortle), so what do I know?  :)

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Re: DS NG+ difficulty

The straight-to-Lavos teleporter gate should be available immediately upon being granted access to the square. The "flickering" graphic effect, which is fairly small to begin with, only happens about every five seconds. It isn't a constant shimmering, like what is often shown with key items or interaction points. It can be rather easy to overlook if one doesn't know precisely where to lock one's gaze.

At any rate, walking to the back wall of the right-hand teleporter pad and pressing the "Interact" button (default is A) should open the gate and start the final boss battle. If it doesn't, there's something amiss.

Are you certain you chose New Game + from the main menu and not the standard New Game? Double check Crono's stats before you attempt to open the gate, and make sure his level reflects the fact that the game has been played through once before; that it's not in the 1-3 range.

@ forum: Are there any circumstances in NG+ in which that gate would not be accessible? Every time I've played NG+, it's been there, right from the start.  :?

Chrono / Gameplay Casual Discussion / Re: Your Favorite Chrono Moment
« on: August 13, 2012, 10:34:06 pm »
The first time I cast Aura Whirl is one of the key moments that got me hooked on Trigger. Being able to combine two separate abilities from two different characters into one larger one was something that I hadn't seen a lot of in video games up to that time. Being able to see all the different combinations was a fun concept that ultimately introduced me to the rest of the lore.

If one factors in the theory of multiversing; in that all things that can happen, do happen, each in their own unique universe; it can be argued that all of the endings are canon. Who is to say that there isn't a universe in which Tata works up the courage to journey into Magus' lair, and runs into Crono & Co. along the way? Or that Leene gets the hots for an amphibian?

Looking at it from beyond the fourth wall, though, it's clearly just game developers having some fun. I mean, seriously, The Dream Project? Good Night? We're not going to start debating the canonical nature of those, are we?

On a similar note, what's up with Nintendo not going after Mother fans for re-translating the games into English? Is it because that series hasn't been released over here...?

It's likely because such works aren't seen as a threat to Nintendo's profits. So long as it doesn't seem like the translators & modders are trying to steal the market from them, Nintendo won't have the motivation to take legal action. If anything, they likely see such works as free advertising; a way to generate interest in their products.

I'd like to know what his source is. That's the first time in my life I've even heard the term "Playstation Orbis," much less what the software may or may not be capable of.

It seems a tad early to be getting too up in arms about it.

No. No. Nonononono. Nooooo. I don't want a sequel. The game is perfect as it is! Nomura, please stay away...

You never know; it could end up being The Empire Strikes Back to TWEWY's A New Hope.

Those with DSi / 3DS who don't download the FREE Anniversary Edition of Zelda: 4 Swords fail the interwebs, gaming, and geekdom in general.

It has single player functionality. I can finally get beyond the bosses! Woo!  :D

Lovers of Doom, rejoice!

Download the game legally HERE. Oh, and you can freely hack/mod the game legally too, since it's OpenSource.  :D id Software are nice people.

Just for the sake of clarification, the Chocolate Doom source port does not include Doom's proprietary iwad files needed to compile the main maps and artwork of the game. Those are still licensed to Id, and they're still selling the various incarnations of the game on their website. The engine upon which Doom is built is open source; Doom itself is not.

I don't like being a killjoy.  :(

It's really hard for me to explain The Facebook, largely because, well, it doesn't have a point.

I wonder how many other people still find this to be true.

Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Re: Best Party?
« on: August 08, 2011, 06:55:06 pm »
I actually dislike Magus as a fighter. He's weak. Dark Matter is the least powerful of the final techs (I think even Shock beats it) and he got no double techs. His triple techs are cool, but not cost effective and waste an accessory.

It's all in the stats.

It's true that, due to his late entry into the game as a playable character, players who rely on boosting stats through heavy tab usage might notice that, by the time they are able to obtain Magus, he may not be the most powerful character in the lineup. Despite that, I believe Magus has the highest natural magic stat of any playable character, which consequently means that any magic-based attack coming from him (Dark Matter) is going to put up ludicrous levels of damage. For the argument of comparison, though, it's all going to depend on how well developed the rest of the characters are statistically.

If he feels stunted, feed him some magic tabs, or give him some magic boosting equipment, and he should be throwing death out of his fingertips.

I don't happen to recall how this translates to characters with maxed stats, but by the time players are able to reach this point, each character in the party should be able to kill Lavos simply by farting in its general direction, so the discussion is partially moot in this aspect.

I think that since no one has yet to do so, at least publicly, it's a pretty safe bet that the C&D was legit; no further speculation is needed.

Besides, hasn't this discussion been had countless times before?

General Discussion / Re: Box TV vs Flat HD TV
« on: June 01, 2011, 08:09:25 pm »
This concept makes much more sense in my mind than I'm capable of putting in text, but I'm hoping the gist of the idea gets through.

It's been my experience that, in order to get the optimum "crispness" of graphical and audio capability, the television and system should be chronologically, and therefore, technologically equivalent to the style of connection (RF/coaxial, composite, component, HDMI, etc.) being used to join the two.

The big technological hurdle is matching the hardware at both ends of the connection. For instance, if you're planning on playing CC on a PS1 with the old composite AV patch cord, you will probably want to use a CRT, "box"-style TV, as those tended to be built around the use of composite connections as a primary source of input. In this scenario, the use of an HDTV would be technical overkill; it's an instance of the TV actually doing its job so well that the resulting image quality tends to be somewhat poor, as it would also display the impurities of the composite connection that aren't ordinarily seen on an older CRT screen.

Using older connection tech on newer TVs is like watching a worn-out VHS tape. It will work, but it might have you subconsciously rubbing your eyes in an attempt to get the image to come into better focus.

If you're actively trying to go HD, CC would probably look best if it was played on a PS3, using an HDMI connection. If the aliasing, or jagged-stairs effect, of the older graphics is a bit too pronounced, try using a PS2, a component (Y, Pb/Cb, Pr/Cr) connection, or both.

General Discussion / Re: Someone at SE hasn't forgot about Chrono...
« on: April 13, 2011, 06:51:05 pm »
A lot of SE titles have a tendency to recycle terms and concepts from other franchises. For instance, the term "masamune" has been used on one of the higher-end weapons in Squaresoft games for ever, it seems like.

It's not that they've necessarily forgotten about it, but it is a practice that they've been using for quite a while.
