I don't know if this is fixed, but here's the link: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/chrono-trigger/id479431697?ls=1&mt=8
My friend and I couldn't find it in the app store via searching earlier, but that link takes you right to it.

Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Re: Square Enix Not Impressed by CTDS Sales
« on: June 10, 2009, 12:00:42 am »Yet FFIV goes on to recieve a full 3D remake with voice acting, and now a full sequal on WiiWare.
The WiiWare sequel is a port of a Japan only cell phone game that's at least a year old, if not more, at this point.
Looking deeper, I see the mobile phone release sold extremely well (though I don't know if the numbers I'm seeing indicate the whole game or individual chapter downloads, or reflect the subscription-based micro-transactions vs paying for a whole game on the spot), but even referring to the original Japanese release I still stand by my point. Why? Because FFIVA came out 3 and a half yrs ago and didn't exactly fly off shelves. And knowing this, that means the sequal was greenlit before the DS remake of IV had time to make a huge impact on such a decision (they were only a few months apart, so some simultaneous development must have occurred).

Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Re: Square Enix Not Impressed by CTDS Sales

I get the "growth" thing, but a few things still don't add up to me. According to the site we're pulling the overall CT:DS numbers, Final Fantasy IV Advance only sold about a quarter of that. Yet FFIV goes on to recieve a full 3D remake with voice acting, and now a full sequal on WiiWare. I know FF is there baby, but why test the waters with one game, see results like that, and greenlight the royal treatment... and then be so condescending about a series you gave a similar kickstart to and had much better sales with? I mean, CT was once considered such a success that (for the US market) they packaged it WITH Final Fantasy IV.
If this is the new attitude, why not just throw it on Virtual Console, like they did with Mario RPG? The FF ports all sell fairly low, but they keep putting those out, re-releasing, remaking, and now adding sequels too (serialzied even! FF IV's sequal is coming out in installments, two at 800 points and a few at 300 points). CT:DS is about as intensive a release as any of those (those got graphical touch ups, new dungeon(s), a bestiary- does Square think they're monster battling sim and item glossary are *that* spiffy?). The Chrystal Chronicles series sells weaker than CT:DS, aside from the first game (which sold weaker than the original CT release). Ditto the Tactics series.
So, seriously, what the hell?

Site Updates / Re: Straight Talk Express with the Compendium...Next Stop: Truth
« on: May 17, 2009, 12:06:41 am »Perhaps SE should take a page from Bethesda Studios and Lion head by providing or at least allow modding of their games by fans who aren't looking for profit.
Y'know, I think that's probably what doesn't sit right with me about this. I haven't really been able to put a finger on it, but SE's reaction, while within their rights, just seems kind of old-school. Like a grumpy old grandpa shooing kids off his lawn. Maybe because I upgraded my computer setup and have been getting more into the PC gaming scene, or because I've been semi-active in communities like Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3, but getting huffy over a fan mod or unnofficial "story" content is just weird to me. There's a restoration patch to bring in content that didn't make the final cut in Knights of the Old Republic 2, and similar patches for Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Starcraft sees custom maps (with event and story triggers possible) shared freely over Blizzard's own servers. And those are just a handful of examples.
That's kind of why I hope that this is simply a misconception, and SE thought that hacked copies of the ROM (or worse, CT DS) were being distributed. Otherwise, it seems very short-sighted. In fact, if there's a serious letter-writing campaign, maybe I'll use my above paragraph as an outline of talking points. A number of the games and companies one could site that treats their fan-community well are putting out best-selling content.

I really don't think SE cares about canon perception. I think it is simply that they happened to catch this right before release, and want to make their stance clear. I also think they misunderstand the nature of the TF and kinda went into a blind panic (maybe they thought this was a CT:DS hack, at that).
Or, to put another way- if they were *that* upset about canon perception, or really that upset in general, wouldn't they have pressed charges for Prophet's Guile? They're kinda making an example out of CE, because that was just about to be released. But the early CE demo is still floating around the net, as is PG.
BTW- to the mods and CE development team- I know a few forums where people share packs of roms, and (without naming names) one of them had one of those "every game!" kind of packs that had PG in its list. Not uncommon for fan hacks to get grouped in with those, but I'll send a friendly note to the uploader (and any others I see) that they should take that down. Or if you guys want to know where it is I'm talking about, PM or email me.

« on: May 13, 2009, 05:54:09 pm »Why they didn't just talk to the people behind this (and more importantly, Chrono Resurrection) and offer up a small development support team to release a high quality product for a tenth of the cost of a from-scratch game but for nearly all the profit (they could pay the actual developers a pittance since they basically have no choice but to accept), I have no fucking clue.
As was mentioned, they are a Japanese company. Haggling with the US branch of their legal department isn't likely to get much personal attention from the folks actually in charge of the series. The best bet for an "official" license on the game is if they brand it an AU "gaiden" game. I doubt Kato would just up and accept it as a canon sequal though.

Hm, it'd be kinda cool to see this revived as a fanfic or webcomic. Are ideas for a shift in medium being tossed around?

Site Updates / Re: Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes Enters Beta Testing
« on: March 09, 2009, 08:57:20 pm »@ all those who wish to beta test CE on consoles rather than computers:
Let the beta testing on the computer get done before anything else. Reporting bugs or anything of the sort whilst beta testing on an xbox or whatever could potentially delay progress. Besides, emulators used on consoles or handheld devices are glitchy either way so you could end up reporting a glitch that was caused by the emulator itself.
Wait until the final release to start bitchin about how the game freezes at point X on your PSP.
Oh of course. I wasn't talking about beta testing. Just a general compatibility check with different configurations of the SNES emulators on the PSP, to see if its playable (and if not, how far before any problems).

Seems like most of the "emulators this probably won't work on" angles are covered, but I'll be testing it out on PSP. Just an FYI.

Chrono Trigger DS Analysis / Re: Chrono Trigger DS Analysis HQ (Spoiler Spoiler, of course)
« on: January 27, 2009, 06:40:39 pm »Meh, that was for Chap to do, but Eske is the most convincing. When he retreats far into the shell, we see the ground visible beneath it. (defeat shell, then return to 1999 version)
I always wondered about that. I figure now maybe they were trying not to cut you off from the Gate if you got second thoughts after choosing "Fight!" but before you actually went in.
Is it of any significance that despite the forward-flowing nature of time in the game, the freshly-risen Lavos in 1999 will NEVER fire his genocide attack? If you crack him open and then retreat, every time you go back he is simply waiting politely for you. Traveling to every other era shows you that life moves on while you are away from the era. But not the Day of Lavos. Even though the recording shows him rise and fire at once, once you engage him he simply... sits there. But the future doesn't change, so at some point he must still attack.

No comment on the military mind thing, but I do have to say that being the leader of Zeal's security force does basically make him their SecDef. I don't really think they had a military in the way we think about it. And what for? To repel other nations? There were the Enlightened of Zeal and the Earthbound below, who lived in squalor with no tech whatsoever. And since Dalton commanded the Blackbird and was in charge of processing the slave labor from the Earthbound... I think it's safe to say that he's the closest they had to a general of some sort.

I agree with Zergplex. Like I said before. The game presents Dalton, effectively, as Ozzie2. Mostly unrevealed story tidbits tell us that he goes on to become Kefka-Lite. His characterization, outside of perhaps the first battle where he auto-wins, lends itself more to comic relief than supreme villainy. Even his bwahahaha reveal as to his intentions in the vortex point to this. I mean, he totally had plans to take over, and he woulda gotten away wit' it too, if it wasn't for those meddling kids and their robot (if you follow my meaning).

« on: January 15, 2009, 06:03:14 pm »Did the Frozen Flame still exist in the Ideal Timeline at the end of Cross?
We can only guess. The only thing we know about it is that Serge survived Lynx's attack and Leena is from Home World.
I would assume Arni in general was probably just the Home World version, no? Except for maybe Radius?
And on Dalton getting his hands on a Lavos spawn, maybe being in the vortex he could get one before Lavos is killed. Or maybe one could have been accidentally thrown in the vortex while being summoned to the Black Omen, giving it a form of immunity when the future changes. Just speculation.
