« on: May 10, 2011, 04:28:28 pm »So I mentioned in my post about how some climate models predicted temperature increases of up to 9°C with a doubling of atmospheric CO2. Then I went on to mention that two studies, using different techniques, have constrained the maximum temperature increase to between 1.5°C and 4.5-6.2°C.

« on: May 09, 2011, 04:15:22 pm »I only know so much about global warming based on the limited research I have done on it, but here's the conclusion I have honestly come to:
Global warming is real and most of the recent increases in temperature are directly the result of human actions. However, a number of predictions publicized in the media present unrealistic scenarios of doom and gloom. Yes, sea levels are likely to rise, but certainly not 3 feet within this century as some outlets have publicized.
Temperature increases have been extremely rapid within the last two decades. However, the pattern of global temperature increases has never been directly proportional to increasing CO2 levels in the atmosphere. It is likely that a downturn in temperatures will occur within the next two decades. At that point, the global warming naysayers will proclaim global warming to be a myth. However, I expect temperatures to head up sharply again soon thereafter. If temperatures do not decrease in the near future, at the current rate, temperatures would be 2°C higher by the end of the century.
Some climate models have predicted temperature increases of up to 9°C with a doubling of atmospheric CO2. However, two studies, using different techniques, have constrained the maximum temperature increase to between 1.5°C and 4.5-6.2°C. In order for temperatures to increase at the maximum predicted amount, the rate of increase would have to remain upward the entire time and increase dramatically.
Changing temperatures and ocean currents will cause droughts in some parts of the world, while other areas become moister. However, droughts have been with humanity since the beginning of recorded history, and would have continued to occur even in the absence of global warming. The existence of some species will be threatened by the consequences of global warming. However, according to Darwinian theory, these poorly adapted species will be replaced by newly evolved ones. Of course, not even scientists believe that this will really happen.
Governments and individuals should work to seriously address the issues of CO2 emissions and carbon sequestration. The primary emphasis should be switching from fossil fuels to alternative energy sources and expansion of northern forests. How realistic the former plan of action will be is another story, but so far, the alternatives don't look all that promising.
Not being an expert in climatology, it is possible that I have made some errors in my summation. By all means, correct me where I'm wrong on anything I have said so far.

I saw your pictures, RW. I can only empathize with your dilemma seeing I've never had to endure something like that.
On the one hand, it's disheartening to know that people won't take the time to learn about an afflicted person such as yourself and why you are that way instead of short-cutting it with a snap judgment about gender identity; you should verbally castigate anybody who dares mock you for your condition.
On the other hand, there's a silver lining to your situation. As a dancer, do you consider yourself artistic in your pursuits? If so, then may I suggest that you view your situation from an artistic perspective. Your head is now a blank canvas for infinite possibilities in terms of how you express yourself. You are the artist and hair is your medium. Show the world your unique personality, intellect, charm, anything by turning that canvas into a stunning work of art. Turn those lemons into lemonade!!
Of course, this would all be until your hair can grow back. It is my sincerest wishes that it does; you honestly looked gorgeous in the "before" picture, even without a thick layer of superficial make-up, and I'm not saying that you don't look stunning with your current situation. Simply refer to my "canvas of hair" analogy as proof that I don't think you're without hair.
And now I'm rambling. What says you?

Indeed, where DID all the anti-protestors go?
I don't think it was a matter of prejudice, but simply that the protesters in question were not so much anti-war as they were anti-Bush. If they really were anti-war, then you'd be right. They'd be hypocrites for not continuing their practice.

My previous neighbors were like that, Shee, except instead of music, they had a truck shop behind their house. Every now and then, they'd happily rev their wheels, even in the middle of the night. I had learned that they pissed away their fortune on their large family and drug-abusing father who OD'd on them. The family then quietly left the house one night w/o putting it up on the market. The house was eventually bought again after being abandoned for six months, but the new family there is just as bad as the old one, except now, it's the kids who are smoking and doing drugs. Oh, and they still haven't bothered to beautify their backyard except stick a giant jungle gym back there which clears our fence by a good yard or so. You can only imagine the violation of privacy from such a vantage point.
You'd think people would move to rural areas to get away from the noise of the city, but apparently, these nieghbors must've missed class that day. Why can't I ever have nice neighbors?

« on: April 30, 2011, 01:21:42 pm »So yesterday, I come home from my weekly volunteer work, and I suddenly have constant bouts of diarrhea and stomach pain. I had trouble sleeping due to both, but then the worst part came. In the middle of the night, my digestive system shifted into reverse I emptied my stomach contents all at once.
It's official. I have food poisoning, and I still can't find a comfortable sleeping position.

« on: April 29, 2011, 06:09:53 pm »Well, since the current flavor of humanity's bad news is the academic environment, I myself have been having a couple of questions on my mind that could use a detailed answer or two. They are:
1) Should education be left to a competitive market? (as opposed to government-run schools)
2) Is compulsory education (i.e. required by law to attend school, especially K-12) doing more harm than good?
3) Should schools have the autonomy to "experiment", and should parents have a choice for what school their kids could attend?
Naturally, if needs come to it, such answers can be relocated to the education thread here in forums, but for now...
I seek answers.
