General Discussion / Re: Video Game Discussion Thread

*opens thread*

"Wow, there's another topic with these exact same posts."

*looks for "what are you currently playing" thread.*

"... wait a minute."

So it's been retconned to the "Video Game Discussion Thread," and we've always been at war with Oceania.

Anyway, been putting a lot of game time into the GHWT Bass career. I've wanted a bass campaign in the GH games since GHII incorporated bass into co-op play. I've been enjoying it so much I can't seem to bring myself to play guitar anymore.

Anyone here play WoW?

I used to, but I haven't in quite some time. I've kind of fallen out of the MMO scene. I wanted to try Wrath of the Lich King, but I can't bring myself to pay monthly fees. Besides, there's too many other games I want to play.

EDIT: And I REALLY wanted to check out Warhammer Online but again, monthly fees.

Alundra. How many of you have actually played this gem?

Never heard of it, but after you mentioned it, I looked up some youtube videos. Thank you for introducing me to this game; I must acquire it. To the Amazonmobile!

CT: Ocean Palace Lavos. He's the only boss I've never been able to beat in a New Game.
CC: Beating the Time Devourer with the Chrono Cross.

Before CTDS I was playing Fallout, Gothic, and Anachronox. Now, CTDS has been getting most of my attention with some Guitar Hero World Tour on the side. I just went halves with a friend on Left 4 Dead, though. So I'll probably start putting a lot of interest in that.

The Chrono Compendium - Because just playing the games isn't enough.

The Chrono Compendium - Unfortunately, no one can be told what Chrono Trigger is...

The Chrono Compendium - We're all The Entity's children in the dark.

The Chrono Compendium - Put your Liberal Arts degree to good use.

The Chrono Compendium - Just close your eyes and pretend it's all a bad dream.

Characters, Plot, and Themes / Re: Lynx/Dark Serge's Having Kid Around

That's another thing. Pip is okay with joining you; I thought it was because, while he's not a demi-human, is not human either, but Mojo isn't human, and he doesn't want to rejoin you either.

I'm thoroughly confused now. Clearly, Serge's companions recognize him, but because he looks like Lynx they snub him.

As for Kid, the only thing I can come up with is that if her amulet really does protect her from death, maybe that's why she follows Dark Serge around. Perhaps following Serge as Lynx would have gotten her killed since he does spend a lot of time around demi-humans during that period, and demi-humans aren't too keen on humans. Maybe it's the same for Serge's other companions, too. They feel joining him as Lynx would be dangerous, or maybe they just harbour a secret prejudice for demi-humans.

That's very interesting. Greco is the only one who seems to have a reasonable excuse. The others seem like they're avoiding him, like they've lost trust in Serge for the time being.

It is far-fetched. Actually, I didn't think anyone would respond; it's just how I think of the situation in my head. I don't really think that's what the game is trying to convey. I, personally, just don't like the idea of a mind-control spell. Even though I'm sure that's what it is.

Harle: Ooh la lah... So, you still insist zat you are Serge, oui? Regardless your memoire az zis Serge... You may be able to rewrite it if you use ze Dragon Tear. In realite, you died 10 yearz ago in ze odder world. How can you say for sure zis iz ze real you? Maybe for you it is evident, but... I wonder if you ever really were Serge...? Furthermore... what waz zis Serge? A figure, a shape? A spirit? A soul? Where waz zis Serge?

For the most part, I think this is Harle just taunting Serge. Since he arrived in Another World, he had been protesting that he was Serge, and in reality, he wasn't. He was a Serge, but in Another World Serge was long dead. Now Harle is making fun of him because he's still saying he's Serge, and she's kind of saying, "but are you really?" Has he ever really been Serge? After all, the real Serge was supposed to die.

I think the "mind control" over Kid must have something to do with this. Serge "becoming Lynx," so to speak, was the first real substance Another World gave him, and maybe he was even beginning to wonder if he was Serge. It's not like anyone in Another World gave him any validation up to that point in the game. In fact, he garners more acceptance from the demi-humans as Lynx. It isn't until near the end of the game that he starts learning more about himself and who he really is. Maybe that's why Harle finally starts calling him "Serge."

Not that a simple mind control spell seems out of Lynx's realm of power, but it's just to easy a solution for me. I like to think of it as, no one really knew Serge. He didn't exist in that world; his companions were following a ghost. So if someone shows up looking like Serge, even he is acting weirder than when they first met him, who are a group of people who just met him to claim that this isn't the person Serge was all along?

Polling / Re: If they re-released Chrono Cross...
« on: December 10, 2008, 11:24:04 am »

If Magus is indeed Guile, I expect it to be a mandatory and elaborate plot element in the re-release, as Magus is just as much of a central character in the series as Schala, Lavos, etc.

Well, I see your point about getting their feet wet and now having to jump in. The ending in CTDS implied something was going on with Magus, and now they should follow through.

It just seems to me that if they made Guile, no doubt about it definitely Magus, his presence would downplay all the other characters in the game. Granted, many weren't too exciting to begin with, but having Magus in the game would make the others throwaways.

I really think that giving Serge his own dialogue would add far more to the game than it would take away.

You make an interesting case. Serge is more complex than Crono, and Serge probably would make for some fascinating conversation. The only thing that irks me is that if he was given a concrete personality, I would feel cheated in the instances in which you choose his dialogue. I'd feel obligated to answer in the way I'd think Serge would answer instead of how I would. I guess that's my problem though.

1. Guile and Glenn added to the main cast.

I think the exact reason they are optional is because they're so great; they wanted to make them harder to get.

Making Guile mandatory because he's Magus(not saying he definitely is, but if it turns out that way) would do exactly what they tried to avoid. If Magus was in the game, everyone would probably use him Serge, and Kid, exclusively. They put so many characters in the game for variety. Making Guile mandatory would negate that.

2. Double/Triple-techs for everyone in the main cast.

Yeah, I can get behind this.

3. Serge unmuted.

First, Radical Dreamers Serge is not Chrono Cross Serge.

Second, I love silent protagonists because I can mentally insert whatever thoughts and dialougue I want into a situation, but that's me.

4. Ditch that collecting items shit (weapons/armor).

I admit, it was irritating at times, but, ultimately, I liked it because it's one of the things that made Chrono Cross more unique.

5. Let me level up my characters.

I believe stats do increase depending on how much you use certain actions. Attack more, strength goes up. Use elements more, magic goes up(like in Final Fantasy II only better). I get what you're saying, though; you want straight up experience. I'm not a grinder. So I much prefer Chrono Cross's leveling system.

6. Chrono Trigger DS extras.

Sounds good to me.

DS version. No censorship, little more mature, but it still holds the old, light-hearted CT feel and appeals to the American audience.

But wait, the village in Lost Sanctum doesn't change much when you reach 600 A.D., well, if a civilization stays the same for tens of millions of years, that is unimaginable.

In one of those quest, you build a ladder in 6500 0000 B.C., and it is still there in 600 A.D...how sturdy are those vines.

Maybe time flow in that sanctum is slower than outside?

The vine thing bothers me as well, but I excuse it for the sake of gameplay.

Seeing as it's a a shrine or a sacred place, hence "Sanctum," that probably has something to do with how little the place changes. The Reptites, more than likely, have tried to preserve it as best they can and not deviate from their ancient lifestyle.
