Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes Music Reinstrumentation

Temporal Flux allows users to change the instrumentation of Chrono Trigger songs. In order to make the soundtrack fresh for the upcoming mod Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes, a contest is being staged to produce the best reinstrumentations of songs possible. We'll go down a list of songs. When a few reinstrumentations are collected for each song, we'll have a vote and decide the best pick.

Adding new instruments is easy. Simply use the CT editor Temporal Flux, available here, and follow the instructions in this thread. We'll be rapidly going down the list of songs; simply e-mail .spcs you create to chronocompendium@gmail.com . Let's see how fresh we can make the music!

I heard your plea for instrument names at Gamefaqs and am posting my reply here, too.

There's a problem with having all the instruments play that line, as undoubtedly they were created to sound truer or better playing their specific parts. But this is probably still the best way.

0D sounds like a very tight tabla, but really could anything.

Hmm...0E sounds like a loose but high tabla.

No idea on 0F.

03 does NOT sound like bongos at all to me, 10 does a lot more.

18 sounds very much like a generic bell tone (or piano) with harp echoing.

1C just sounds like a low guitar.

25 is a low snare.

29 is a piano with an chime-like echo that does not sound like a traditional instrument.

2A...is a hand drum. Can't say more than that.

2C is obviously generic strings.

31 sounds like a cross between a shaker and a ratchet.

35 I think there is a name for this, but it sounds like a cross between bells and whistles.

36 ...sigh, so many hand drums. Couldn't tell you. Probably just a different pitch.

38 is a very low flute

3C Uh, definitely not a real instrument. Unless you count rubber ducks as instruments.

3D Just a tweak of the duck.

Now I'll disagree with all your picks!

5 is definitely not a bass drum, and sounds like yet another generic hand drum.

8 Just barely different from 7, and "Loud" isn't really a good separator

1B would be better titled MILLENNIAL fair shout

9 contains no timpani.

12 is definitely not trombone, and probably saxophone.

1F is definitely not castanets...shaker or maracas

22 is definitely not an oboe, and probably a high flute.

27 is a generic suspended or set crash cymbal.

2D is a traditional instrument, but I can't think of the name

37 is definitely not a vibraphone, and sounds like a made-up synth bell sound

You can hopefully trust my judgement, as I'm a percussionist at UW-Madison, but feel free to argue back.

Maybe I'm being dense, but I really don't see the point of this.  Wouldn't Mitsuda, having created these instruments, have picked the best ones already?

Yes; we're banking on the chance that other variations can produce good songs.
