Oof, PSX version? All I can remember from FFC were the load times (though the anime intro was cool, and I always wanted to see that wedding ending)

One factor that really added to my time was the fact that I was unable to run from battles due to having two defective SNES controllers (One works completely except for L button, the other one's control pad is completely dysfunctional and is only used for getting the clone). Not being accustomed to LLGs, I ended up frustratingly fighting tooth and nail at levels 20-23 at Ocean Palace and Black Omen.

Ah, in that case I should also mention that I was playing on the PSX and that I used the bucket to get to Lavos.

Which is why I never use the bucket on PSX.  The friggin background slows everything down, then each individual boss is a separate fight, so it has to load that, load the boss its mimicking, etc etc.  That'll eat up time.

I love doing speedruns, its a great way to keep a game you have played to death alive. I can beat SMW in 14 minutes, but I want to get it down to 12. I haven't tried Trigger yet, but I plan on doing it soon. Once I get my ** levels, I won't have anything else to do. I think the key is picking the three characters you are going to use against Lavos and using them every time you can. And also seeing who has the best stats at what levels, so you are not screwed with crappy stats because you are at levels lower than normal.

We'd actually have to make a few minor adjustments to the rules, mainly, pulling the defeat of Lavos out of it.  Reason being, there's no clock after his defeat (with the bits and whatnot).  I suppose one possible way is to defeat Lavos' outer shell, then use the save point inside of him for the final time.

There are plenty of sites that have stopwatch. All you have to do is click on the start and let it run until you finish. Something like that can be used to combat the final battles lack of a clock.

Or you could always go 'oldchool' on the problem and, y'know, use a clock...

Well its easier to keep track down to the seconds and all, I would find it hard to remember the exact second I started playing, hours after.

My best time for completing a CT speed run is a little under 7 hours, with all side-quests finished.  Probably about 6:50ish.  I bet if I really, really tried, I could get it down to 6 hours or so.  On New Game + of course.

A few tips for anyone who wants to try:

1) Skip every chest, period.
2) Know exactly what to do to trigger events that drive the game forward. (eg, get Marle at the fair, then talk to the girl sitting on the fountain to open Lucca's telepod)
3) Know where the "lines" are that you have to cross to trigger a battle.  You'd be surprised how few fights are forced upon you.  You can avoid a lot by doing things like hugging a wall.
4) Save often, but don't go out of your way to get a savepoint.
5) If you get into a battle you can avoid, reload from your last save.
6) Some forced fights you can run away from - do it!
7) For ones you can't run from, kill them as fast as possible.  Water 2 and Dark Mist seem to be the fastest casting spells thatll kill everyone (on a New Game + anyway)
8) As soon as the game starts, set the Battle Speed and Battle Message speed to their fastest.
9) Also, set the Battle Mode to Wait.
10) Don't read any dialogue, blaze through it ASAP.  A turbo controller helps here.
11) Know all the maps so you can get to where you wanna go fast.
12) While running, you can 'sidestep' to the left and right without losing any forward speed.  Use this to your advantage.

I think the point of the speed run is to do it on a regular game. If I was to do new game + I would just do it at ** level in like 4 hours or whatever.
