Maybe if we had a dedicated server it'd be no problem, I could just set up our own IRC server, but we're on cheap hosting that only provides Apache with PHP on a machine that hosts about a hundred other sites as well. I'm firewalled in here at school and don't have any spare computers I can set up as a chat server, so I can't set one up that way either.
And there's no way in hell I'm ever going to install some crappy chat software that uses the web server and works by refreshing an HTML page every five seconds with a form for submitting text. We'd probably get kicked off our hosting account for trying.
If you want to chat, just agree to meet on AIM or a chat room in IRC on some server.
Either that, or find some way of raising at least $100/month for a dedicated server or the cost of colocation.
