Square Enix (recently) announced that they will buy at least 247,900 Taito shares worth 45.16 billion yen ($409.10 million USD), thereby making Taito a subsidiary. The Kyoto-based electronics maker Kyocera, which holds a 36.02% stake in Taito, has already approved Square Enix's takeover bid. Both companies want to profit from their existing overseas businesses: While Square Enix has a strong presence on the North American market, Taito is stronger positioned in the European market. The acquisition of Taito will also mean Square Enix's entrance into the arcade sector.

While Taito is best known for its amusement and arcade facilities, the company recently signed a publishing agreement with Nihon Falcom, under which it has released PlayStation 2 remakes of Ys III, IV, V and Zwei in Japan. In September, the company will release a PlayStation 2 remake of Langrisser III in Japan.

Time to get SET (Square Enix Taito?) But seriously, whoa...

I think it'd be more like SE would create new, arcade-friendly games...but who knows?

Oh, and am I like one of the only people who thinks this is a big deal at all?

Yeah, it's definitely big. The arcade market, to my knowledge, has been on a downward spiral in the US. Perhaps this will revive it. I mean, I'm not even sure if F-Zero AX machines EVER made it over here...

Yeah, I think that's mainly because consoles are on the up 'n' up nowadays, especially compared to the arcade glory days...Not to mention the outlandish prices for some of the arcade games today $1-2 a play!?! I think I'll pass that up and play some .25 oldschool games...or go home and emulate...er...consolate...w/e...

Uh, no one was saying we shouldn't accept it...As a matter of fact, I always look forward to these types of things...It always means more money for the company and more access to more talent. Both of which are pretty much always pluses...Why would you petition these things? The progress of the company is the progress of the players! Hurrah!

There will always be competition. It's just, why make it so that the competition is better than you?

That Final Fantasy scenario is a little over-the-top...The FF series has always been about constant innovation and the use of new ideas.

Even if you don't agree w/the recent quality of the newer Final Fantasy games, you can't say that new ideas and innovation weren't involved w/them. FFXI Delved the series into the realm of the MMORPG...FFX-2 became the series' first real sequal (and first mainly fanservice?)...and each of the new FFVII spin-offs ventures Square-Enix into new realms: PSP, cell phone, & a game-based movie...

Didn't Enix buy Square, and not the other way around?
