Microsoft Virtual PC 2007
« on: May 06, 2007, 09:32:40 pm »
I just found this interesting tool, and decided to install Windows 2000 in this virtual environment.

I have thought of many various uses in the few hours I have possessed this.

It could be used to test software, testing new operating systems. ( I will use this to test Vista as soon as I get it )
and since it is a virtual machine, everything that happens in it stays secluded in itself, meaning, that if you catch a virus or any other harmful material, it stays in the virtual machine.
Think of it as a "Containment Field"

At the same time, there are downsides to this as well..

You can adjest how much RAM it has based on what your system has, I have 782 MB of ram, and I set the Virtual PC to 512 ( For testing Vista sometime ).

just Google up Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 and have fun.

( This does not compe preinstalled with any OS, meaning, you will have to have an bootable ISO or a Bootable Windows install disk to install anything on this. )
It also supports other operating systems that arent Windows, but I have never tested it.

Anyone else here have any experience with this interesting bit of software?

I thought so myself, and the thing is, its completely free, and that baffles me.

Software like this would sell, but I prefer free. ^-^

I have something installed on my PC called Vista Transformation Pack, which is supposed to make XP look and act like vista, I installed this on the 200 environment.

HILARIOUS results.

  • It tried applying the vista theme, failed, no UXTHEME.DLL
  • Replaces all the icons fine
  • Boot screen worked halfway, it showed the boot screen, but instead of the gren flyby bars, it showed the standard Win 2000 loading bar at the bottom.
  • The mouse cursers HALFWAY worked, the 2 far left pixels for each cursor was floating to the right of the left of the cursor.
And the funniest thing of all, it lets you install it, but when I tried to uninstall it "This OS is NOT supported"

I've got VMWare Server on my machine. It's interesting, and I play around with it sometimes, but I haven't really had the time for it recently. I think virtualization is a fascinating technology, and it has a lot of cool applications. It's just that none of them benefit me right now. Could be nice for learning other operating systems when I've got time though.
