Could you share the stories with those of us who don't plan on spending precious money and time on finding out for ourselves? I'd like to know how they compare, personally. I'd also like to know how the storyline works with main characters that can't possibly have a said role in the plot except as the "Hero(ine)".

Sure thing.  While I'm at it, are they any ancient texts written entirely in a dead language you need me to translate?

That’s no simple thing you're asking me to do, it's going to take me a couple days between work, the baby and other crap that life likes to throw at me, and thats if I can find my old FF XI journal.   I'll start a new thread about it when I'm done.  In the meantime, carry on.

As Promised:

The Story Of Final Fantasy XI

This guy, Fallen Angel X, has gotten a lot further in the game than I did, as save for the conclusion to the Chains of Promathia expansion, the entire 'main' plot for the game is found here, arranged in the chronological order.  You, the player don’t actually come in until point 13.  Discovering the truth behind the origin of Vana'diel and 'shaping' its future is part of the game's allure.

Of course certain 'special' storylines are excluded, such as the quests for the higher-level jobs (Summoner, Samurai, etc), and each of the three nations have their own unique problems to solve that may or may not involve the larger plot, but for all intents and purposes, the link above should be enough.

Given, it's more than I expected. Still not quite up to snuff for a normal post-FF3j Final Fantasy.

Are you kidding?  You have to admit its way deeper than the plot for FF X and X-2 at least. FF V has it beat, sure, as does FF IX.  FF VII would be a bit of a stretch, though...

A story is always good when it's written by Masato Kato. Even if it's for an MMORPG :)

The Zilart are reminiscent of the Enlightened Ones also, IMO.
