Has anyone ever tried a complete remake?
« on: August 10, 2006, 02:36:27 am »
I know I'm totally new here and therefore, credibility is limited, but listen.

I love Chrono trigger, I don't know how many times I've played through it, but it's significant.

In any case, I start college in a couple weeks, my course is on computer programming and I'm getting my bachelor and taking another year for video game design at sheridan college.

In any case, at the end of the course I have to submit a final project, and it has to be fairly large. I could think of only two things I would want to do, a remake of either Earthbound or Chronotrigger, and since the Earthbound franchise is still fairly active with mother 3 being released, Chrono trigger is the logical choice.

In any case, I was curious. Has anyone tried doing a complete remake? Ideally it would be 3D, cel shaded (I think it fits, a la Dragon Quest VIII) and have a physics engine.

Any feedback?

Yes, and Square sent them a cease and desist order.

Really? I guess I can understand... that's really awful though...

I suppose I could always go private and then just release it and disappear  :?

I wouldn't sweat it though. If you just want to do something like that for personal, academic reasons and didn't publicize and distribute it, then you probably won't have to worry about Square.

It seems kind of far-fetched for one person to consider remaking an entire 30+ hour game though. I mean, that's a lot of art, music, and level design...

I know what you mean, but I have 3 years to do this, and I model and make music on my own time, and if push comes to shove, I can grab the soundtrack from elsewhere. That really sucks that Square cease and desist'ed (sic?) the other attempt. I could have sworn that there was someone who remade a video game from the 16 bit era successfully  :(.

3 years? That's plenty of time, as long as you know what you're doing.  8)
