Episode 342: Hypothetically Speaking...

Yeah, I haven't been reading 8BT for quite some time (I think around ep 220 or so...) and upon my recent catching up, I got to this one, which, as you can see, shows Lavos' second form! I dunno...Just thought it was interesting...Plus, BM & RM are talking about a Batman vs Dr. Doom scenario! Awesome! Just for consistancy's sake, here's the follow-up of said conversation, which takes place in the next Episode: Check Mate!

I never saw this before, and I have read every comic. I can't believe I don't remember this. :(

Oh yeah, here's another tid-bit that mentions Chrono Trigger from one of Brian's rants about video game writers...

Quote from: Brian @ NuklearPower.com
Video game writers: the imagined spaces of today's youth are choked with your abortions of wit -- or, perhaps more accurately, with the attempts of your out of touch supervisors to be "edgy, y'know, like kids like". Choosing silence over banter is preferred as it allows the player to insert his own responses into the game. It's another level of interaction with the gameworld, one that costs nothing and reaps deeper emotional loyalty in the fanbase. It's why the narrative of Chrono Trigger works so much better than FFVII - X2. You cannot tell me there's a more touching scene in all of video game history than when Marle is telling Crono the story of how they got him back. If you even think about citing some ridiculous FMV sequence from a latter day FF game, you're out of your mind. Million dollar rendered splendor and orchestral symphonics do not a narrative make. Then again, I couldn't possibly care less about watching Nobuo Uematsu and Tetsuya Nomura splatter their rehashed audio-visual bukkake all over my television and proclaim it the greatest love story every told, so maybe we'll just agree to disagree.

And, man, I've been collecting quotes from 8BT the whole time now...and one of my current favs from a recent one is from BM...

If he's going to discount any game where the protagonist talks, that leaves out several games with equally touching scenes, such as Jedi Knight II and Final Fantasy VI.  I also find the later sequences of Final Fantasy VIII with Squall and Rinoa heartwarming, even though the battle system chokes on donkey cock.  But he's right in one thing; I cannot tell him there's a more touching scene in game history.

Yeah, it doesn't look like he's saying that...because after he says the part that I bolded, he says 'latter day' FMV sequence. And in the bold, he says its better than VII-X2. And really...the FMVs between Squall & Rinoa are nice 'n' all...But, like so many people have pointed out about VIII (i personally have no qualms at all w/the battle system besides the fact that it's too easy), besides the lacking character development for the non-Squall, Rinoa, & Seifer characters, is the fact of Squall's mysterious 180 halfway into the game...It kind of takes the wind out of the 'drama' of any romantic scenes between him and Rinoa if you ask me...
