Tanaka Interview #2
« on: February 02, 2007, 12:46:01 am »
Cubed3 apparently got in line to speak with Hiromichi Tanaka, Chrono Cross's producer, in the same visit that produced the Jeux-France interview. If you don't recall that one, Tanaka said that a new Chrono game was not planned due to the difficulty of securing key personnel for development. Well, the new Cubed3 interview is not out yet, but a C3 editor summarized:

"The issue of the future for the Chrono games was brought up and clarification asked for, due to recent comments saying a sequel to Chrono Cross not being planned. In response, he stated that it certainly is not out of the question Chrono will make a return, and as for seeing Chrono Trigger return in any form (a port, remake or Virtual Console release – the last option currently being a 50-50 in terms of happening), it would come down to working out copyright details between the various members of the original team (most of which are no longer staff at Square Enix)."

I'm curious why they would need to do that, considering Square Enix totally owns the Chrono license (regardless of who made the game). The full interview will be posted as soon as C3 gets up. Stay tuned for more Compendium planning and change in line with this new Chrono activity in the gaming world. Thanks to Ninja Lou for this update.

There is always hope that things change. In April 1997, Tanaka said the same stuff about Chrono Trigger 2 not being in development... And yet Chrono Cross would be developed and released two small years later:

We have waited along time for a new Chrono game. I believe we all have been somewhat patient as to when a confirmation of a new Chrono game comes up.

Blame it on time...

I have questioned myself whether not to submit my story of Dalton and Guardia with the Lavos DNA to SE... I would imagine they would simply through it away just like they probably did with that letter I sent them many months ago.

I've definitely got my eyes and ears glued to this particular piece of news.  In addition to the game itself, Zeality, if you happen to hear anything else about that interesting copyright statement, please let us know.  As you can imagine, I'm particularly interested in that, as well.
