The original intent was as a sort of watermarking/identification method in case someone rips off the site's layout by copying all of the HTML/CSS. As soon as they resave the images, the normally invisible parts usually become visible due to the compression artifacts introduced by JPEG or the color clipping done by GIF or PNG.

They weren't necessarily meant to be hidden though.
Oh...

You know, that's an absolutely fantastic idea...I know why it didn't occur to me, too: I've never run a site before, at least not to this extent. (I've run a site once or twice, but it was always extremely small scale.)

There's actually random selected, sexually explicit illustrations there, but you have to adjust your gamma or use those special red/blue 3D glasses to see them. A red filter and a blue filter will work too.
...why would you have random sexually explicit illustrations hidden on the main page of the Compendium?

But why sexually explicit?

Think about how embarrasing it would be...they don't bother to examine the HTML and just toss it up on a random website with all the pictures and everything, and when they look at the website...WHOOPS! There's pornography all over the place!

It's a security measure intended not only to protect the Compendium, but to teach as well.

Or they would get even more users/visitors than out compendium, having pornographics all over the place.

Somehow I HIGHLY doubt this, so I am downloading it to test. ;)

I've written down must of the quotes they put in the logo on the main page.

There's a front page?
