WARNING: Video encoder scam on the loose!
« on: April 11, 2007, 07:50:16 am »
First: Downloading pirated movies from torrents is wrong.

However, if you do find yourself accidentally tapping that download button while looking for Xrated ads on Snarf-it, then you might realize that you've downloaded a video that says it needs Vodei to run. This usually happens when the video originates from www.moviesempire.com (pr0n). Here are some dodgey elements to this, not encoder, but "wrapper". Some of these may be perfectly explainable (and are explained, albeit with not a lot of support), but yeah. All the information on this I got from:

http://forum.inmatrix.com/index.php?showtopic=2256

1. www.moviesempire.com & Vodei are owned by the same person, or thing, or whatever
2. Vodei does some crazy things to your computer so apparently the uninstall doesn't remove all registry entries and .avi files run funny
3. Although the FAQ says that the encoder doesn't call back, it is interesting to note that the file doesn't run without an internet connection!
4. Vodei claims that it increases file optimization by reducing file size without reducing quality. However, it actually increases file size! VodeiMark claims that this helps bittorrent speeds, but this is a little murky.
5. The owners choose to update every version of Vodei, but never explain why. The only answer is to stop ploys of disassembling and going around the annoying "REGISTER NOW" shit.

If anyone has downloaded Vodei, and doesn't know what to do, go here http://www.vladd44.com/video/vodei.php. I was able to extract the video, but audio didn't work.

And don't ask why I have a Vodei encrusted file when Vodei only attacks pr0n.
