New Fan Translation Project in Need of Help
« on: March 27, 2008, 07:53:31 pm »
Hello good people.

I have created my own fan translation of Chrono Trigger based on Ted Woolsley's original and CC's retranslation project.  Everything minus one detail has been completed.

Out of personal preference and my own personal reasoning, I've decided I want to change Crono's element icon to 'Heaven'.  I even have the icon completed as you can see:

However, inserting it into the game has proven most difficult.  Using Tile Molester (and having tried a number of other tile editing programs), upon finding the associated tile in the rom, I am met with this (click thumbnail):

As you can see, there are 2 rows of miscolored tiles above the lightning icon.  These actually make up the middle portion of the icon which you can see is also miscolored.  This middle portion is actually the bottom 2 rows of the icon.  I am certain that some of the tiles above the icon play a part in how it is rendered too as they are somewhat different in CC's version with 'Sky' than they are pictured.

I've made certain the colors of my icon are correct in line with that palette.  Upon importing into the game and then saving it, I am obviously met with an icon that is messed up in how it is rendered.  I've altered my icon so it looks more like what you see in Tile Molester.  The result?  The bottom portion renders correctly since it is no different than the bottom portion of lightning.  The middle portion is obviously another matter.

I have spent weeks trying to figure out how to get this to work.  I've gotten nowhere.  Can someone please, PLEASE help me out here and explain to me what it is I need to do or am doing wrong?  I will make certain to include your name in the credits when all is said and done as meager an incentive that may be.  But, whatever help I get will be appreciated.  I've had this completed for weeks and haven't released it yet because of this one issue.

Thank you!

Oh um.  TO fix that little thing.  Press the +/- sign and it'll bump it up or down by a row.  So you'll be able to piece it together.

OMFG!!!!!!  I love you!  If I was a woman I would demand to have your babies right now!  It worked.  Expect the patch and the release within a day.

I've done 2 run throughs so far and completed several endings.  I'm sure there will be some text formatting errors that I missed since it's just been me for the past 3 months.  However, I'm certain anything you may find will be minor.  I'd like to keep a running tab of any errors people do find though.  Fortunately, for this kind of project, I'm an anal retentive bastard.

At least 5 personal friends are now in the process of playing it now that I've completed it and they're going to keep letting me know how things are.

I'll release the IPS patch tomorrow morning after 8am EST.  It'll be in a new thread.  I still need to create some release notes and cover any bases I may be forgetting at the moment.  There is also the matter of acknowledging justin3009 for his help.

So, very, very tired.  This has been my main concern for a while now.

Well, I'm going to release the patch today.  So, I guess everybody that wants it can be a beta tester.  When I release it in a new thread, I'll leave my contact info with instructions on how to contact me if something is wrong.
