New Translation vs Translation Differences Article
« on: December 10, 2008, 06:56:35 pm »
Based off of text dumps of the Japanese version.

Marle Foreshadowing
Fixed.
Quote
It's hard to believe our kingdom has stood for a
thousand years now. Our King is the thirty-third
descendant to the throne of Guardia.

It's a miracle he can manage to rule the kingdom when
he can't even keep his own daughter in hand.
She's probably throwing a fit at the castle this very
moment, demanding he let her go to the fair.

Competitive Crono
Still exactly the same as the SNES.

Racer Names
Exactly the same.

Taban the Blacksmith
Detail not mentioned.

Mommy's Little Boy
Doesn't use "mommy", but is closer.
Quote
My dear old wife made that lunch for me.
Always the highlight of my day! Gives me that
extra oomph when I'm starting to feel worn down.
Gossip Woman
Fixed.
Quote
Oh hoh hoh... There's nothing like a good fair!
Say, have you heard the gossip?

Lucca's Glasses
Fixed.
Quote
What does "teleport" mean?

This contraption is supposed to transport objects
in the blink of an eye.

Time Joke
Not completely sure.
Quote
A great number of things change as the years go by,
but if there is one thing that will ever be the same,
it's women and their insufferable love of gossip!

Gossiper's Promise
Yes.
Quote
Oh, my! Speak of this to no one, or there will be
terrible consequences. I've not heard a thing!

...

Lucca and Robots
Yes.
Quote
Lucca: Hmm...
Reducing the form factor of a bipedal robot without
compromising balance is tougher than I thought.

Oh, Crono! Hurry up and escort the Princess
back to the castle!

Belthasar Revelation
Yes.
Quote
There's an old man living in a dome he built near
Death Peak-said he wanted to monitor it.
Talk about crackpots!

Rat Warning
Yes. It's a bit different because the directions it gives you change if you changed the control scheme.
Quote
If you go and change the control scheme around later,
you'll have to figure it out on your own, squeak!

...

Melchior Dialogue
Unfortunately, not fixed.
Quote
Lucca: Why would your name be engraved
on that sword?

Melchior: ...

That...is a very long story.

Melchior: But that is the story you came to hear,
is it not?

Marle: Yes! Tell us about the Masamune!

Lucca: Of course! Tell us about the Masamune!

Marle: Is there any way you can fix it?

Lucca: Can you reforge it?

So, what translation are you comparing the DS one to...? I also don't know what those entries marked "Fixed." are supposed to mean...>_>

"Fixed" refers to dialog listed on the Translation Differences article that in the DS translation, matches the meaning in Kwhazit's Retranslation.

Ah...One that I recognized was Lucca referencing the lil robot she eventually makes in the anime ending sequence where 'the baby' shows up...I think the line was slightly different, but it was closer than Woosley's...

I took down only a couple quotes (along with all of Magus' lines I could get)...Here's a couple interesting ones...

Quote from: Belthasar
A doppel doll! That would do nicely.
The magician Norstein Bekkler could whip one up in the wink of an eye, if only he were here.
You've not heard of him, you say? Well, he loves festivals. Find a fair, and there, too, you shall almost certainly find Bekkler!

I didn't get that far in the retranslation, but I know that's different from Woosley's...

Quote from: Bandeau
The name's Bandeau.
Here to build the ferry that's to service Medina and Truce.

I don't recall him having a name in the original, but I may be wrong (I don't usually go back to Medina much to chat with the locals...or, in this case...the ferryman from Truce...>_>)...

Quote from: Gaspar
This is a battle between Lavos and the very planet itself!

That's after he explains each sidequest at the end or something, I think...Anyways, I thought it was pretty nice Entity=Planet confirmation...again, idk if it's in the retranslation or not...

Quote from: Robo
1999 A.D.! Date confirmed!
The time is 1:24!
This is the precise moment!

Bring Robo on the Epoch to 1999AD and he tells the exact time Lavos erupts!

Quote from: Magus
Dal zumal phara-lo lierra...
Cast open the gates that lie betwixt heaven and earth...
In exchange for the life of this world...

Interesting that we get yet another translation of that magic gobbledegook there in the beginning...

Also, the Black Wind is, like, always plural and never capitalized...I could take down Magus' other quotes...but, yeah...>_>

Yeah, he was called Bandeau in the SNES version and Robo always has said Lavos erupts at 1 24, only now I think it is made more clear that it is 1:24 as in an hour and minute, not a month and date. I was never sure how to interpret it before.

So maybe he erupted at 1:24 PM on January 24, 1999 AD?
