Dimensional Vortexes and beginning a new game+

I finished my first playthrough, and saved that file as per usual, seeing the vortexes open up across the time periods. Immediately, I went to reload that file to play them, however it loaded me inside Lavos. Not thinking this was right, I started a new game+ and plan to get to them and beat them as soon as I can, with the epoch. However, i preferably want to continue this save file after beating lavos, so how do i go about doing that? Thanks guys.

If you're inside Lavos, just use the gate to leave...?

I figured I wouldnt be able to fight dream devourer without killing lavos

The Dimensional Vortexes open once you defeat Lavos, but then you can load your previous save and go through them (after which, you talk to Gaspar, go through the bucket & then fight the Dream Devourer)...
