Radical Dreamers 'Double D' Patch
« on: January 06, 2009, 10:06:25 pm »
Hello Everyone!

My name is Yoko Endovale (before you ask, it's only a penname.) I have decided to try and edit the DemiForce 'Radical Dreamers' patch to match the original script to the best of my borrowed knowledge.

This isn't being done by a group of people. So far, it's me doing the text editing and plugging with utunnels graciously posting original translations. This project was started to aid with therapy while I combat post-traumatic stress disorder, and has become quite an intense pet-project of mine. However, without a complete retranslation made available I am only able to change things in a limited scale.

So don't consider this a PERFECTIONIST translation until some kind soul decides to help me with a retranslation!

Here's the story behind this:
Quote
One January day... I read a particularly enlightening article, hosted here: http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Radical_Dreamers_Translation_Differences.html. I was quite taken by the work put into it and started to repatch the RD script as a pet project. For fun, I decided to submit it to the forums for people to look at, even if it never becomes popular.

This is part of daily therapy as I combat post-traumatic stress disorder, to try and ready myself again for re-entry into college. So this is emulating homework on my part, where I do at least 30 minutes of work a day either rescripting or beta testing.

Graciously, utunnels has given me that aforemented guide and also posted a few notes for me in the original thread. As differences are pointed out, I go back and tweak.

This patch is called the 'Double D' patch for the fact Kid has become 'Kidd', since personally I never felt 'Kid' is a real name. (Perfectionists may hate me here, because in the native language her name is still Kid. I might, when finished, release a fix for people this bothers so her name is back to the native spelling.)

You can download this and use it as I go along and work. Anything you see that ought to be changed would be a great help to me, if you should post it here. I will keep a list of changes and credits which will be entered into the final 'Readme' for this particular patch.
Remember, you need to provide your own unpatched Radical Dreamers ROM. This is only the patch. I will not, for legal issues, provide the ROM or the patched ROM in any circumstance, but you can easily find it via Google Search.
Run the EXE 'sour.exe' in the same folder of your ROM and go!

For people interested I have included the script-e.txt and the official encoder from DemiForce. You can then, if you please, compare it to the original and get an idea of how to edit things yourself. It's actually really easy when you learn the text, it's a bit like HTML!

For now, the Readme ReadME! is the first version writ for the original beta release of my patch. When I release a stable version this will include the full list of version changes and any credits due, and possibly become pretty. No promises on that though.

Download the versions here! (Newest will be listed at top, click on the bold, italicized text for the download):

All patches are hosted on my premium account at Rapidshare. However, if mirrors are eventually added they'll be listed here. If someone needs zip instead of rars, ask and I will supply.

CURRENT RELEASE - Version 0.2
Details: Includes several wording changes and new breaks in text. Overall gameplay is still the same. Here's the changes -
  • Kid becomes 'Kidd'
  • Date and Spacing fixed in opening
  • Kidd's habit of growing extra D's has all been fixed.
  • In the Red Book, strange symbol appeared instead of it's. Changed to it is (still needs testing)
  • Goblin Battle 'Knife in Eye' needed a cleartext
  • Edited Nail File into 'Industrial Files'
  • Added detail to Mouth of Truth awakening
  • Tidied explination of Old Man in Catacombs
  • Fixed line 'She won't realized'
  • Venus's speech has a new Cleartext
  • Another Cleartext added to Kidd's offer to Serge

Major script changes:
  • Overhaul of the final meeting with Venus, taken from utunnel's raw translation. Going to go test this ASAP.
  • Not-so-major, but I fixed the 'Le Text Speed?' screen to English.

Original BETA release 0.0
Details: Original release. Runs stable, but has many over-length paragraphs and spelling issues. Considered to be the experimental launching pad.

Changes from the original are slight. Thus, credit to DemiForce is maintained since it is using that as a backbone here.
Most notable, the books in the library are rewritten. All the translation differences from utunnels's article have been inserted without editing, to test the system and learn the codes.

Here's the projected future for this as of Jan/09/2009:
  • Continue beta-testing. Pass through ALL scenes to make sure nothing has accidentally altered or broken.
  • Add any script changes posted or noted by a translator must have details. See note at bottom of post.
  • Keep a list of errors and fix them ASAP
  • Flesh out and alter a few lines to make the text more interesting, yet ACCURATE, for originality.
  • Keep an eye on Kidd's accent, LOL! And also learn to stop turning Magil into Magus in the text.

THINGS I WOULD DIE FOR HELP WITH:
  • More raw translations!!
  • Getting help with removing the SatellaView Screen at the opening.
  • Getting help with in-game saving capabilities

I hate to be this way, but to prevent any gag postings or easter-egg insertions from people, if translations are posted here I kindly ask for a few details. If you aren't established as a strong, main translator on the website please note the comparisons to the DemiForce translation and the raw translation for the original, and be truthful to me that this is the correct version. Don't break my heart.
For now, utunnels is my most trusted source. But anybody else can help if they so please.

Comments, questions, notes, love letters, hate mail, ETC can either be posted here, PMed to me, or sent to my email listed in the Readme ReadME! included in all versions of the script. I check my email daily and will do my best to keep up.

Finally, because of the nature of this project, and because of my mental health, this may speed along just fine or come to unexpected halts. Be prepared for either. THANK YOU SO MUCH! And have a wonderful day.

Final Note
Quote
If you are interested in programming the game in your own way, go for it! I am entirely willing to help with basic text-insertion (I am still very basic in my learning here) in your game and also proofreading. Also, as long as it is lax, I would be glad to help with projects that require re-writing into Engish. My japanese is too poor to do my own translations. If you decide to use this patch as your own launching ground, all I ask is for a Thank You in the readme of your game. I'll also be glad to playtest any patch based on mine! Just PM me or email me.

Kid doesn't sound like a name to me neither, that's the reason why I always rename her to Kidd in CC.
But something to metion, original RD uses キッド(kiddo) like in CC, but the name of the first scenario is called "Kid 盗めない宝石"(also see Kato's sketch: http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Image:Katord.jpg.html).
Kid once called herself "Kid the Pretty Phantom Thief" in game, although that's a joke, but it did reminds me about the comic Magic Kaitou, in which Phantom Thief Kid is the protagonist(he's a 17 years old thief).

The Phantom Thief Kid is a world-renowned thief who steals treasure and gems. He is sometimes known as the Kaitou Kid or International Criminal 1412. He was named Kid when a journalist hastily scrawled "1412" and Booker Kudo read it as "KID.". The Japanese word "Kaitou" means "mysterious thief," often translated "phantom thief."

I'm glad someone agrees, and that note is interesting!
Speaking of which, utunnels, if you come across anything new I'd love to see it and add it into the game.

I got to beta test a little today. Here's the error list in my patch:
Fix spacing in opening.
Kidd's name during one book reading had one too many D's
In the Red Book, a strange shape appears instead of 'it's'. Changed to it is.
Double check this - What color book does the mirror refer to? Does it match up? It's the purple book in the back.
Goblin Battle 'Knife in Eye' needs a ClearText.
Fix 'Nail files' to Files.
Clarify 'Truth of the world' sentence.
'He refused to accept the reality' - Tidy this up.
'She won't realized' - LOL tidy this up.
'What's the matter' has Kidd with an extra D again.

I'm only about to go talk with Riddel so I'll keep my notes current.

Perhaps we need a translator. LOL
Or else no matter how many differences I point out, they are nothing but scattered pieces.
If you want to make a retranslation like they did to CT, I think a skilled translator is a must.

But if you just want to write your own story, that'll be interesting. Sorry my English sucks, at least not good enough to write stories.

And about battles, hmm, I think too many things were re-written, that's why I don't want to point them, unless I find something really interesting.

Tis fine, tis fine.
Just if you do find those interesting bits...

Retranslating the entire story is not something at my skill level.
HOWEVER, I wouldn't mind plugging in text for people who did want to retranslate it seriously.

Also, the retranslation for CT for some reason makes me sad...

As of 8:29 AM Central Time I've gotten back to playing and went through the reworked optional 'Mirror Scene'. Of course, I managed to riddle it with issues.

Venus 'Soft Smile' needs a ClearText before 'Don't be so sensitive.'
Kidd's picked up an extra D again. Why does this keep occurring? LOL
Cleartext needed after Kidd's offer to Serge during Mirror scene.

As I go along I actively fix the script. It'll take me a little bit to get through the rest of this, but...
After this I may consider going and tidying up some places to add a different flavor to things to make it more interesting to those who have already gone through the DemiForce translation. I'm working very hard to resist the urge to 'Easter egg' all over the place, LOL!

If I ever get really ambitious I might rewrite the entire script, but that'd be a personal thing and a present to my snugglebunny. The entire set of books in the library were writ up for his amusement.  Scripter's liberty, I suppose. If this does bug people I can try to rework the stories closer to the original translations, but without a translation of them I'm sort of stuck. Even if it's basic I can make it flow like it should in normal text, if anyone cares.

I wonder if I could get an English credit for this...!

Again, if anybody has/had a script they wanted to use but never found the time or learned how to plug it in, I'm open and willing to assist folks. Just swing by and ask.

Expect the second version of my patch to hit the shelves in a day or two.

"Lynx!"
Kid who steps into the room suddenly cries out.
What, Lynx is here?
I rushes into the room after Kid.
But there's nobody else here except Kid and me.
"Where's he, Kid?"
Kid stands calmly beside me.
"It's a joke."
My body, it can barely move...
"Hehehe...you believed?"
Kid tries to hold her giggle.
"It seems you need something exciting in your life. Right, Serge? "
I ignores Kid's tease and walks toward the mirror covered by red cloth.
"Did our noise disturb you?"
Hearing my civility, Venus in the mirror replies with a smile.
"I don't care, Mr Serge. Do you have something to ask me?"
It is in such a beautiful alto.
"No, I don't have something urgent, only to see you in passing."
"Oh my! You really have an ill sense of humour."
Venus laughs mischievously.
"What?"
Kid responses with a stiffened face.
"Why!? Don't make me angry." (I don't know why Kid gets mad, mabye she doesn't like Venus talks to Serge in such a way?)

Now see, I think those raw translations are perfect for me to work off of, man!

ClearText merely unclogs the screen for the next wave of incessant chatter.

I'll play around with that some, very interesting! And yes, I think even if she never would admit it, she's jealous of others getting his attention. Hehe!

Now, for example of my reworking, I take the raw translation...

Quote
"Lynx!"
Kid who steps into the room suddenly cries out.
What, Lynx is here?
I rushes into the room after Kid...

And mold it a little into a flowing paragraph...

Quote
"Lynx!"
As she steps into the room, Kid cries out.
Wait, what, Lynx is here?!?
I rush into the room behind her...

Occasionally tweaking here and there.
So whatever you provide for me is really invaluable and fascinating to me! It's like uncovering a hidden passage in your favorite book you've never seen before, or reading it in a new way.

Here's the new transcription at the last meeting with the Mirror of Whispers:

Quote
"Lynx!!"
Kidd shouts loudly as she leaps into the room.
What?!? Lynx?!? I rush into the room behind Kidd, readying my knife. My heart pounds as sweat rolls down my brow.
... Except... There's nobody in here except Kidd and me.
"Where...?"
Beside me, Kidd giggles. "Gotcha, mate! I'm just kidding."
I feel paralyzed... Dammit, Kidd!
"Tee hee... were ya scared?" she asks, hiding a grin.
"Ya need a little more excitement in yer life, mate!" Kidd stifles a laugh. All I can do is groan and roll my eyes.
Of course, she loses control and starts laughing. I ignore this and walk to the cloth-covered mirror...
"Uh, we didn't bother you with our noise, did we?"
Upon hearing my concern, the Venus turns my way in the mirror and smiles.
"No, it doesn't bother me, Master Serge. Do you have something to ask of me?" She speaks in a beautiful alto...
"Uh... not really. Just decided to visit as we came by..."
"Oh my! You have an ill sense of humor." Venus laughs mischievously. That tone reminds me of when Kidd laughs after thinking of something devious.
"What?" Kidd glares with a stiffened face. "What do you mean??"

Making a few spelling changes in the text before going back and testing this scene.
Then back to normal beta testing until any major change appears.

Version 0.2 has been added- take a look at the revamped original post as well!  :D
