When a person sees someone who is hot, or someone they like, the person will usually blush. The idea behind the nosebleed is that the person is blushing so hard, so much blood is rushing to the face, that it has to get out somehow and it goes out the nose.

You know what's greatest about them though? When they try to implement them in live action. If it looks realistic or if it looks low-budget, it's always awesome.

i'm just saying i don't know where they got that symbol from. that doesn't happen to my nose.
Not many do, but I actually saw someone fall asleep and blow a snot bubble out his nose while snoring.  I laughed my ass off and woke him up, but apparently it can really happen.

But it's mostly an exaggerated comic feature that is prominent in Japanese anime and manga.  Same category as the nervous sweatdrops, nosebleeds, sneezing when someone talks about you behind your back, popping veins when angered, etc.

it's called dramatization. They do it so they can add more emotion and personality to characters.

hilarious!

it's called dramatization...
actually, it's called animation. it's all good though.

when they get scared, shouldn't they visibly poop their pants a little bit, under the same logic?

Believe it or not, but it's sort of both! Though actually "animation" is more the medium, actually, so I think idioticidioms makes more sense...

In many forms of animation people usually turn pale white...in anime they sometimes take it a step further and have the people's spirit try to leave their bodies...

Hahaha. Im a huge anime/manga geek and its funny to see things I thought were common being explained =) I think all the over exaggerated expressions in anime and manga are great. The snot bubbles, the nose bleeds, and the crazy facial expressions when something happens. Really makes you laugh xD

heh, and here I thought it's what made Teen Titans. To each their own.
