Chrono Compendium Project Repository
« on: March 17, 2009, 09:24:58 pm »
Hello!

As a courtesy for project developers, I've set up a SourceForge.net project site for use by Compendium project members. This will provide a place to host source code for projects, provided they MUST follow these requirements:

Every project desired to be hosted on CCPR must meet these requirements:

- It must be licensed under GPL
- The accepted types of projects include: scripts (like Python, Perl, PHP, whatever), tools or games (this does NOT include ROM-hacks)
- Artwork and fanfiction will not be accepted unless it is intended to accompany an accepted type of project (such as icons or other media for a project)
- The project must be free and the code able to be modifiable to anyone. (Though, if anonymous users browse the code, they can only download, not upload, so there is little risk of sabotage. Only approved project members may upload)
- The submitted work must be in a human-readable format
- The project must be YOUR work, unless given permission by the developer.
- CCPR mods may, at their discretion, modify, add, or remove work from your project. Removal of work will not be without good reason, however.

You may also want to mention the license that someone agrees to when they put a project on SourceForge.

Also....I'm not 100% sure how the intellectual property of square works with open source licensing....for example....if you make your very own game that takes place in the Kingdom of Zeal what kind of legal issues does that present (I honestly dont know).

Anyways this is a pretty good idea just make sure you keep it legal if the compendium is linked to it.

That part of the copyright law was made by a 2 year old in his "MINE!" phase

Sourceforge really blows. The hosting sucks, the project pages are a monstrosity, and the collaborations tools are useless. It's been that way for a while now too. About the only reason to use it is for a version control repository and file hosting, but there's better repository services out there, and finding some decent hosting for files and a simple website isn't that hard to do.

On a more relevant note though, did you ask Z if he would mind you setting up something in the Compendium's name?

I didn't know I'd need permission. I thought this more of a contribution out of courtesy.

You'll probably be the only one using it, though.

Sourceforge for all it's flaws does give a project decent exposure *shrug* I put a couple projects up there while in college.

As for name, it is still nice to ask the person associated with the name to use a name before you use it.  (just for future reference).  The point of my first post was even if the copyright laws are flawed, if you are associating any project with the compendium you, as a leader of this endeavor, should make sure that any project hosted there stays legal (since it could indirectly bring exposure to thsi site).

*shrug* I was just giving advice and it's like only a .0001% chance Square even cares.

CCPR was denied on SF anyway, it seems.
