Bekkler a Mystic?
« on: October 23, 2009, 02:41:36 am »
I've been wondering who or what Norstein Bekkler is.
His use of magic makes me think that he could be a Mystic.
But the problem with this theory is that Bekkler is weird even for a Mystic.

So what do you think Norstein Bekkler is?
Do you think that he's a Mystic?

He doesn't necessarily need to be a Mystic simply because he knows magic.  Gaspar knows Bekkler, so he must have been from Zeal, or at least have been there at some point.  Long enough for his work to be widely known by a Guru.  Since everyone in Zeal used magic, that would clear up the magic question if he was human.

I don't think his physical "weirdness" means much.  It's the Chronoverse--there are plenty of weird-looking beings (although, granted, Bekkler is one-of-a-kind).  What's weird about him is his presence in 1000 AD.  How the hell did he get there?  It doesn't show him being transported through time, like it does for the Gurus and Janus.  Maybe there were other gates that opened during the Ocean Palace incident that aren't shown.

But back to the Mystic thing--the games really don't go into how the Zealians viewed Mystics.  We know they employed them to guard the Mountain of Woe, the Ocean Palace, and the Black Omen.  But did they view them as equals, or as inferiors?  If they viewed them as equals, Bekkler could have been a Mystic working in Kajar, or elsewhere.  If not, I don't see how the Gurus could have known him--unless he was disguising himself as a human.

Although the Zealians did have Nus around, who seem to be treated as equals.  Has there been much speculation on whether the Nus are Mystics or not?

Ooof, this raises more questions than it does answers!

Wasn't it Belthasar, not Gaspar, who knew of Bekkler?

The problem is, we do not know where they got the knowledge from. Belthasar might have just read reports of a Norstein Bekkler person who made clones in a historical record in 2300. Gaspar, seeing the whole of time from the end of it, might have learned of Bekkler that way. Given that Melchior has no particular interest in him, even though he is just a few yards away, implies to me that Bekkler probably wasn't known to the Gurus before they fell through the gates.

But he also doesn't really perform any magic (at least, none beyond what one might expect in a side show). The floating head and hands is odd, but a trick that could be duplicated without magic. The real conundrum is in his clones (or Doppledolls, if I recall the retranslation correctly). Are they organic constructs? Mannequins? Magical manifestation of people?

Ah, I think you're right.  I always seem to forget who says what, since they both talk right after the other during that part of the game.

My theory is that he was from Zeal, and the Queen/Dalton/somebody got his cloning "technology" for the clones you see on the Black Omen. The queen may have wanted to use this for darker purposes, which the Gurus knew of, but were not particularly happy with.

I don't think they were buddies, but I do think the Gurus at least knew his situation and what he could do. As far as the whole time/space traveling to different "festivals", I have no explanation.

I think for the most part his odd appearance just has to do with his sideshow. I always assumed it was like the wizard in the "Wizard of Oz". His outward appearance wasn't real. I think that the lack of explanation on what the clones were constructed of and how he was the only one in time to be able to make them was just another plot hole that Squaresoft/-enix has always been known for. I love there games, but none of them ever seem to be complete. That may actually lead to them being enjoyed even more because it leaves avenues for you to explore and discuss things with others when the game is over instead of you knowing everything without much thought. So yeah I think his appearance is just part of his show. It is strange how little info yo get, and he even says that he won't make clones for just anyone which I found particularly odd. It seems he could sense something about your party.
