Been awhile since I've lurked on the Compendium, and I find this discussion interesting.
Here are a few names I've decided on for my novel project. Some of the names are entirely mine, others are from various posts or fan-fiction projects that, sad to say, I don't know all the authors of or I would give credit where it's due. Someone please fill in the blanks if you know the missing authors:
Crono Lantree – mine
Gina Lantree – mine
Zack Willard – partly mine (Zack was an NPC seen at Leene Square in Crimson Echoes. In my story, he's a minor character who helps set up Crono's fateful “meeting” with Princess Nadia underneath Leene's Bell, as well as the opening flashback scene with young Lucca.)
Lucca Eleanor Ashtear – V_Translanka (I may mention her middle name during Crono's trial, but it is unlikely to come up again. I can use this, right?)
Alistair Ashtear – mine (Lucca's grandfather, and inventor of the steam engine. He is deceased by 1000 G.D.)
Nadia "Marle" Guardia - Squaresoft (Marle is not a name the character was born with but something she makes up abruptly when Crono asks her name during the Millennial Fair. It's not random, though. The name has great meaning for Nadia.)
Sir Glenn the Swiftblade – mine (“Swiftblade” is not the name given to Glenn at his birth – but rather the honorific given him when he ascends to knighthood. i.e. Cyrus is known as “the Brave” and Rachel – Glenn and Cyrus' generic-looking companion seen in the Frog King flashback – is known as “the Sureshot”. I have not decided on a birth name for any of these three, as it will scarcely be mentioned.)
Chancellor Horus – possibly mine, but am unsure. (Guardia's chancellor in 1000 G.D.)
Chancellor Goran – mine (Guardia's chancellor in 600 G.D. - impersonated by Yakra.)
King Aldren Guardia – unknown (Guardia's monarch in 600 G.D.)
Queen Aliza Guardia – Squaresoft, I think (Nadia's mother. Died in 992 from an unknown ailment – possibly poison administered by Yakra's descendent.)
Marle Fairin – mine (Princess Nadia's nanny, who essentially raised Nadia following the Queen's death. Died in 999 G.D. from natural causes.)
King Malcolm Guardia – unknown (Guardia's monarch in 1000 G.D.)
King Vandar Guardia – mine (King Malcolm's father, who oversaw the beginning of the industrial age and conferred great wealth and status to the Ashtear family. Died in 978 G.D.)
Vernon Lonn – mine (A new minor character of my own creation. Crono runs afoul of the luckless farmer when he first arrives in the middle ages.)
Jin – mine (Another original character of minor standing. He guards the magistrate's chambers in Truce City. I don't plan on giving him a family name. Incidentally, “Jin” is a nod to Xenosaga – a series Squaresoft could have helmed, but chose to give to Namco.)
Frank Doan – mine (The leader of 756 surviving humans in the ruins of 2300 G.D. Doan has extensive knowledge of recent history and seems to know more than he lets on. Doan is a more important character in this story than the original game depicts.)
Ozzimort – mine (Cue the J.K Rowling jokes. “Ozzie” always struck me as a ridiculous name for a villain, so I came up with a fuller variant. “Ozzie” will be a nickname that Lucca comes up with. i.e. “Look's like Ozzie's in a jam.” Ozzimort has a descendant by the same name in 1000 G.D. (with blue skin instead of green) who encounters a younger Crono Lantree and Lucca Ashtear five months before the Millennial Fair.)
Uzanikalam – mine (Slash's full mystic name. He becomes known as “Slash” after defeating fourteen other Mystic Lords in single combat to claim the title of Medina's greatest warrior. He uses Zealian swordfighting techniques, as well as a sword dating from that period, to dominate his foes. Slash has never known defeat and is Ozzimort's most trusted lieutenant.)
Fleazokog – mine (Flea's full mystic name – pronounced like “flay” rather than “flea”. This name is despised by him, so he shortens it to the more “beautiful” Flea. Of all the Mystics, Flea is most able to take on a true human form - like his Zealian ancestors - due to his incredible magical talents, but chooses a female form due to its beauty. His magical powers are second only to Magus, but he also follows Ozzimort out of respect for his cunning and ambition.)
Emperor Alphard Zeal – Zeality (The “emperor” title is mine, but I claim nothing else. Zeal is an empire rather than a kingdom to help differentiate it from Guardia. I do not yet know what role the character will – or should - play in my version of the story, but his name will at least be mentioned in honor of Crimson Echoes. I will certainly confer with big Z before making a final decision on him since that character is his baby.)
Empress Samele Zeal – unknown (I consider this name to have almost canonical weight since, like Schala, it has an otherworldly quality to it. I really want to give credit to this particular author. Someone help.)
General Leonidas Dalton – Thought (Excellent name, Thought! Though this is only a fragment of your creativity. I figured that “Dalton” would make a better last name, so I'll use “Leonidas” for his first name, if that's okay. Dalton is the cousin of the late Emperor Alphard – that's from a fan-fic I don't remember with any certainty – and serves as Empress Samele's “Minister of Imperial Security”. His competence is sometimes questionable, but his ruthlessness is not.)
Cedric Guardia – Zeality and the Crimson Echoes team (One of the most important characters in all of Chrono fan-fiction, Cedric will be fully realized in the later stages of my novel project – an essential component of the modern world's history that was curiously absent from canon works. Recovering an artifact of staggering power from a Zealian ruin – the Frozen Flame - the young officer Cedric Guardia became the world's most powerful man almost overnight, and with that power came the ambition to do what no other man had done since the mythical age of Zeal: unite the world under one ruler. He quickly conquered the fertile continent of North Zenan and turned his attention to the south only to be unexpectedly waylaid by his former friend and man at arms Antaeus Poore, a native of the southern lands. Knowing his dreams of empire would remain unrealized so long as his resourceful rival lived, Cedric challenged and defeated Antaeus in a dual on the Span of Zenan, leaving a giant hole in the otherwise indestructible bridge at the spot where he struck down his old friend with the Frozen Flame's power. Conquering South Zenan only increased Cedric's appetite for conquest and he next laid eyes on Choras, which quickly capitulated rather than face his wrath. But Cedric would never return from Choras, his flagship and most of his fleet being lost at sea under mysterious circumstances, leaving his wife and queen the task of founding the giant kingdom that would bear his name.)
Queen Anne the Divine - Zeality and the Crimson Echoes team (“The Divine” was added by myself when I perceived that Anne - “The wind beneath Guardia's wings” - might hold some religious significance to Guardia's history. In my version of events, and contrary to what was implied in Crimson Echoes, Cedric never actually ruled the kingdom he forged by the sword. That was done solely by Anne, a woman of such virtue that she was never corrupted by the Frozen Flame despite spending years in its proximity. Her wise rule united the Zenan continents in a way Cedric never imagined; they wanted to be part of a greater whole. By the middle ages, Anne is worshiped as an angel who chose to live among mortals as a living example of Creation's providence, a faith that endures well past Guardia's dissolution around the turn of the millennium.)
Serge Krayton – mine (I'm really not certain about this name since his fathers name, Wazuki, is not clearly established in Chrono Cross as being first or last. I'll gladly entertain suggestions on which way I should lean on this. Explaining Serge in any great detail beyond what is already known will give too much away, but I will say that he will play a major part when it's his time to enter the stage. My story will be both a remake of Trigger and a sequel for Cross, for those who don't already know.)
Wazuki Krayton – mine (A man doomed to recover a long-lost artifact at sea where it went down with Cedric Guardia over a thousand years before. The alien relic quickly corrupted the weak-minded Wazuki, causing him to betray and kill his only son, Serge. This irredeemable act of murder physically transformed Wazuki into the living embodiment of his son's greatest fear: a panther that had attacked and nearly killed the young Serge weeks earlier. The panther-like figure then discarded his identity of Wazuki Krayton forever and was thereafter known as Lynx.) Note that, by necessity, the convoluted plot of Chrono Cross will have to be simplified greatly for the endgame of my story to make any sense, so I've taken some liberties with canon – a task that gives me no shortage of anxiety.)
Harle – Squaresoft (One of the most mysterious characters in the Chrono mythos. Harle has no other name. Who exactly is she? Is she a human? Or is she a dragon? Or is she something completely different? My answer to this question will probably defy expectations.)
That's all for now. And, as usual, I've written a gigantic post. Making up for lost time, I guess...
