It would be more accurate to say that Serge is the main character because he can use the Chrono Cross.

1) Maybe, maybe not. Lynx, Harle and Kid are just as important.
2) Noo.. Because Kid saved him, which caused the dimensions to rip apart. He's missing in one dimensions that should have had him, but ended up in home. So Another World can still have him, when hes in one dimensions, hes the others missing piece.
3) Meh.
4) No.

1) No they're not. The fate of the entire Space-Time Continuum does not rely on whether they live or die simply on the merit of their life and death instead of the reprecussions afterward.
2) And he drowned in one dimension because he was the Arbiter, inspiring Lynx to kill him, causing Kid to save him and split the dimensions.

What do you mean it's programming? It is plotwise too that he is the main character, so only he can use it. Don't ask me why, since you don't know either. Gamewise, Serge was designed to be the main character of the PLOT. That is why he is also the missing piece, and manipulated by Belthasar to aquire Schala.

But WHY is he the main character, is what he means.

I'd just like to add that without Harle, Kid or Lynx; Serge would never have gotten up to defeating the TD. No Harle = no Dragon Relics or way of opening the Pearly Gates. No Lynx = no lead on where Lynx went (Chronopolis). FATE might die and then anyone who gets to the flame first would have it. And if for instance Serge gets it, then the merger might happen. If Kid gets it, everyone is doomed if Harle is to late or is dead. If Harle gets it too soon and merges, then Serge can't stand up vs the Dragon God.

The chain of events was needed, and Lynx, Harle, Kid and Serge are the main charactes. The Missing Piece Concept book has them as the 3 mains and from there, their links split off.

By that logic, Schala is the main protagonist for causing the events of CC. Or Belthasar for controlling them. Lynx, Harle, and Kid are important, but not as important as Serge, the protagonist you control who is cursed with carrying the burden of the entire space-tine continuum and beyond. Lynx, Harle, and Kid's roles can probably be substituted depending on the circumstances and some wild probabilities. This does not hold for Serge. They're main characters, but Serge is THE main character.

The main protagonist of a story is the one whose quest you follow.  The fact is the game's perspective revolves around the journey of Serge.  Not Schala, Belthasar, Lynx, Harle, or even Kid.  Remember you can put off teaming up with Kid for a while... if Kid was really the main protagonist we would instantly follow her.
Harle is even later in the story, so the true story is that of Serge.  He is the one who gets transported into a different universe, the one who was needed to fill the void in this parallel dimension.

Actually I think there's a way you can make it so Kid is NEVER a member of your party. Can't confirm that myself, though.

Yes, you can refuse and avoid her everytime in the game. The only time you're forced to have her as a playable character is during the first battle with Karsh at Cape Howl, but otherwise you can skip her during all the game. But that's weird because when you're into the Dimensional Vortex, it's Harle who gives you the Astral Amulet instead of Kid.

The main character of the game is Serge.  Lynx, Harle, and Kid are people who do their parts to guide Serge on his journey.  Yes, Serge wouldn't have got where he did without the others, but that doesn't mean that they're the main characters.  It's just like in LOTR where Frodo wouldn't have made it to Mordor without Sam.  Frodo still remained the main character of the story even though Sam was a huge influence.  It's the same thing with Serge and Lynx, Harle, and Kid.

I didn't mean to them as totally main characters. They are the main people who drive the plot. Serge is obviously the main protagonist, but the others are also characters that when played correctly, are part of the main story which should almost make them the main characters along side Serge.
