Since i can't play it on a snes, i used an emulator...but level doesn't really matter(ever tried a low level game?), you just need to get most techs at mt.woe(respawning rubble), your level should then be high enough, and even without, the 2nd and 3rd form are the same as later in the game, so you may try the lifeline tactic. The only problem is that your speed is pretty low, so for crono the alloy blade would be useful. You can try to get greendream before u fight himand also virgil hats) at fionas sidequest, then there is no way to lose
