Temporal Flux Questions!
« on: July 12, 2006, 09:34:12 pm »
I've got a couple questions pertaining to Temporal Flux 2.00:

1: I was wondering if the maker of Temporal Flux is still actively working on improving the program, or even just working with it period.

2: Is it possible to have sprites draw over a tile when they are Y tiles below it, and draw behind when they're Y tiles behind it (IE: Adjustable priority based on if you're in front or behind)? For example, the singular trees in the Millenial Fairgrouds. Or is this something hardcoded into the ROM and is uneditable?

3: Is there a way to only locally edit a particular tile (in terms of priority) such that it doesn't affect the same tiles found elsewhere throughout the game?

4: Does anyone know how to get in touch with the creator of Temporal Flux, or does anyone know of a knowledge base or support centre for it? Of course, I'm excluding the "manual" when I ask this.

Sorry I can't answer your questions but I need soemone to send me the manual for Temporal Flux, the first one. I have parental controls that know exactly what I want to do on this computer and apparently htes me cause it picks certain things that are most important to restrict me from. E-mail please.

If I recall correctly, Geiger said he already has a couple of things fixed or to be fixed, but he's busy with real life and won't release a new version for some time.

I don't think you can draw a tile over a priority-Y tile.

3: Is there a way to only locally edit a particular tile (in terms of priority) such that it doesn't affect the same tiles found elsewhere throughout the game?
There are 2 kinds of tile priority. The options in the left panel are for the tiles themselves (affect them everywhere), while the options in the Window>Location>Tile properties menu are for local, individual stuff on the map. You can make sprites be above priority-Y tiles with these.

4: Does anyone know how to get in touch with the creator of Temporal Flux, or does anyone know of a knowledge base or support centre for it? Of course, I'm excluding the "manual" when I ask this.
The Kajar Laboratories are the main knowledge base. There's a few infos in the encyclopedia (changing portrait tutorial) and in the wiki, but this part of the forum is much more rich/active.

Thanks for the responses, Chrono'99.

As for my second question, I don't mean drawing a tile over a priority-Y tile, I mean drawing a sprite. It looks really awful when things are drawing over the characters when they are in front of it. By this, I mean certain "wall" tiles found in the Millenial Fair tileset, things like the top-middle tile of the couch in the tileset for indoors in Present, and especially the singular trees I mentioned before.

I've also tried playing around with Window>Location>Tile properties to manually force a priority-Y tile to draw under the character, but it never changed it. It didn't matter if Sprite Over L1 was true or not, the tile still drew over the sprite. Because of that, I'm beginning to think that the whole "Sprite Over L#" is actually the functionality to build multi-floored maps like the Dactyl's Nest using the Z-plane.

oh wow....I always thought the sprite over Layer 1/2 was just broke ....but I just got it working.  In order to use it you have to have "Solidity" turned on (or probably anything that colors the tiles).

This is huge....priority should never be a problem again.  I've always been changing it globally but now everything can be done locally.

Note that when using the "local" priority you want to set the tile "below" what is going over the characters head to sprite over layer 1/2...because that is the tile they are standing on when the sprites head is being covered.

An example of how this is useful......say you have a couch that is going over the sprites head, instead of changing the couch's priority (which would change it everywhere) you can set the 3 tiles below the couch to "sprite over layer 1/2.

Strange, I've never had any problem with Sprite Over. I've always used the local stuff for the maps like Mammon Macine Hall etc. Here's a screenshot of something that works for example (it's just normal dark blue on the map):

I always was changing it without turning on Solidity/Zplane/NPC Solidity etc......(I realize now how stupid I was being).  So I'd change it place it, save, reload the map and my changes hadn't saved.

Tile properties are a real pain.  I had to overhaul them at least a couple of times during the last beta phase.  The problem is that there is no single state for the majority of the items.  Set the values up one way, and its walkable.  Flip a bit here and its not.  Keep the bit and change the value, and suddenly it is again.  A major headache.

I have my own question about Temporal Flux.

An unhandled exception has occured in your application

Access to the path "C:\Documents and Settings\m\Desktop\(insert name here)'s Roms\SNES\Chrono Trigger.smc" is denied.

What is that suppossed to mean? And no, trying another modificator like Chrono Tweaker doesn't work eitheir.

Turn off the read only function on the file. Right click on Chrono Trigger.smc (or what ever you got it as) the click properties, and if Read-only is checked, un check it then hit ok.

Thanks a lot, dude. I'll get to toying with my Chrono Trigger now.

New problem, Temporal Flux thinks my rom is not a Chrono trigger Rom.

What's the internal name of the rom. Temporal Flux, like some other editors, is nitpicky on the rom's internal name.

How do I find the internal name, and what should I change it to?

It might be just a badly interleaved ROM. Try downloading a new one.

Kajar Labs is the knowledge base, and lately it's been exploding with new information from new ROM hackers and other veterans attracted to Chrono Trigger editing. It's also been aided by a couple cases of authors tutorializing their own newfound techniques (.spc editing, for example). In any case, Kajar Labs is periodically raked for information to be formally put up in the encyclopedia. I prefer thread authors to tutorialize their own stuff (just to save trouble in learning it). The Crimson Echoes thread will similarly be combed for new tricks once the project is complete.
