They're at it again, those laughy daffy loons from the good Christian town of
Up'n Fucked Almighty In The Headville. You see, the United States has just elected Keith Ellison as its first Muslim Congressman ever--predictably, he's a Democrat--and the fundie Christian Dominionists are enraged that
he plans to take his Oath of Office by swearing on the Holy Koran rather than the Holy Bible. With headlines like
"America, Not Keith Ellison, decides what book a congressman takes his oath on," the right-wing nutjobs are out in full force demonstrating what noble children of the Lord they are.
Ridiculous. Of course, I myself would not call either of those hateful books particularly "holy," and if I were made to swear on a document upon taking an oath of office, I'd swear on the United States Constitution. Nevertheless, so long as we have this religious tradition of avowing our service as elected representatives of the people in the presence of a higher power, it is particularly egregious--but not at all surprising--that the dominant Christians want no other religion but their own to be recognized. They want Christianity and the United States to be one and the same. They want a lot of crazy shit, but take note: Those of you who ever sat in a history class wondering why so many societies could persecute religious minorities like the pagans and the Jews so ruthlessly, for no good reason, simply look around you: Today's Christians would do the same thing.
We are living in history.
