Ten Things About Where You Live
« on: February 03, 2008, 10:54:14 pm »
The idea of this thread is that we post five things we like and five things we don't about the area (could be a city, could be a country, or anywhere in between) in which we live.

I live in western Washington State.

Five things I like:
1. It's beautiful. Trees, mountains, lakes. It's good to be surrounded by nature, even in the city.
2. The climate. It almost never gets hot, although this winter has been a bit harsh.
3. People up here seem to be a lot more laid back than in other places I've been.
4. Burgers not withstanding, there's a lot of good food up here.
5. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002923946_cities11m.html

Five things I don't like:
1. The people out here can't drive. Rain, shine, snow; whatever. They just can't do it.
2. The roads are laid out in an asinine fashion. Grids are your friend.
3. There really aren't any burger joints of the caliber you find in Southern California.
4. Sundown before six.
5. Unpredictable weather. When it's not constantly raining, it's randomly raining.

I live in south Sydney.

Like:

1. It is quite 'green'.
2. The food. Very multicultural.
3. Not a lot of traffict.
4. Laid back.
5. Close to important areas in Sydney.

Dislike:

1. Majority of the youth. Very uneducated (though only here, and in the west)
2. Unpredictable weather. One day it's 40, the next it's 5.
3. Rising crime.
4. Rising pollution.
5. Rising traffic.

As you can see, Dislike 3, 4 & 5 is relatively new. Ah, the good ol' days.

I live in central Massachusetts.

What I like about my city:
  • It has it's nice places with good parks, nice scenery, and I can walk to a bunch of cool places.
  • In my particular city, in my level 2 classes at high school, I'm one of the smarter ones (GREAT for my self esteem)
  • There's a college near by (can't walk there, anymore, though)
  • Worcester isn't all that far, so I can do a lot of cool stuff there.
  • Finally, my old city is about half an hour away, and the town after that that I lived in is an hour away.

What I don't like about my city:
  • Worcester isn't all that far, and that's all the more reason for my father to call and ask us to come over. I don't like him 'cause he always smells of cigarettes and constantly... looks at my boobs. *shudder*
  • Most of where I live in my city is crud. It's kind of hard to sleep with almost constant reggae beats blaring from your neighbors.
  • Almost ALL of my city is TOTALLY INTOLERANT of Japanese music. They don't seem to get, 'You don't understand a word they say, but you listen to the beat and you like!' However, as I don't speak Spanish, I don't know what they're saying, and the beat drives me NUTTY! And, still, they BLARE IT OUT OF THEIR CARS!!![/rant]
  • Many people here (at least the ones I hang around with) are wanna-be Anime nutties, so you constantly have to put up with, 'OMGS! Did you see what happened on Death Note last night?! OMG, Light's so hot!' This is annoying to me as, being an insane Anime junkie, I watched the ENTIRE SEASON in Japanese with subtitles BEFORE IT CAME TO THE STATES. Oh, and they don't know a good Final Fantasy from Naruto. *shudder*
  • Finally, as the poor housing thing I live in now is mostly Hispanic and African Americans, I (being Caucasian) feel like white trash here, even though I'm very intelligent.

And there's my list! Yay!

Quoted for truth and hilarity!

Tacoma, Washington

Likes

1 - Our libraries are actually pretty good and have a nice selection of graphic novels & stuff.
2 - There's a pretty cool club called Club Impact just downtown which sometimes has good local shows (though I haven't been there in forever).
3 - I'm pretty close to the Tacoma Mall & not far from the South Hill (/Puyallup) Mall.
4 - I live really close to Pacific Ave (less than a block away actually), which is convenient for bus stops & close corner shops & grocery stores.
5 - The Tacoma Art Museum is just downtown as well, which may or may not be as awesome as the one in Seattle, but w/e.

Dislikes

1 - The Aroma of Tacoma - It smells sometimes and rain doesn't make it better!
2 - Rain, rain, go away! Don't come back until I say!
3 - I live next to a Middle School...Kids piss me off and there are a lot of lame little losers around.
4 - Cities just suck to live in. There's like one big tree every 10 blocks if you're lucky.
5 - I live really close to Pacific Ave (less than a block away actually), which adds to the aroma & just sort of permeates you with car exhaust if you walk along it or something.

Medford, Oregon

Pros

1. Not to hard to find a good hike.
2. Pretty good youth employment opportunities.
3. Really nice medical facilities nearby.
4. not too big not too small.
5. Every damn person is a gamer.

Cons

1. 40-50% of the people here are retirees
2. Every damn person is a gamer.(keep in mind the one above)
3. Education in the whole state sucks.
4. Library was closed then reopened possibly soon to close again.
5. Ashland is horrible(neighboring town).

Medford, huh? I used to live with a guy from Shady Cove. Apparently Medford was the "city" thereabouts. He was glad to get out of there.

Edmonton

Likes
1. It's in Canada, which is, all told, a good country, and Alberta is a good province within that country.
2. We have an excellent hockey team, with one of the best histories in the NHL and arguably the best fans.
3. Not too big, not too small (meh, about a million people, which isn't too bad.)
4. Nice river valley
5. It's relatively clean, for a big city

Dislike
1. Bloody cold weather. Last week it was -30C (-22F) BEFORE windchill; including it was about -50C (-58F)
2. A little too big-buisness boom city for my liking... what will we do when all the oil is gone?
3. Too sprawling a city
4. Bad public transportation network
5. The prairies... ie. no terrain definition. I'd prefer to see some hills and/or mountains

Northern Idaho.  (Dang, there's alot of people here from the Northwest, yeah?)

Five things I like:
1. A low crime rate.  Can't beat that.
2. Lakes.  Damn, they're great.
3. It's a short drive to quite a few attractions... a three story mall, skiing resorts, a concert arena, casinos... awesome.
4. Not having to constantly watch behind me while clutching to a tube of pepper spray while I'm walking down a dark street at night.
5. Denny's (the one that caught Joseph Duncan, lolz!)

Five things I don't like:
1. The school system.  There are so many deadbeat dropouts just walking down the street, hanging out at the mall.  I want to punch them.
2. Weather extremes.  It's either REALLY COLD (like now) or REALLY HOT.
3. The lack of care for stray animals.  Seriously, I have four cats of my own, and I swear I'm feeding 5 more that live outside my house.
4. People who don't bother to obtain snow or all-season tires. ARRRRRRRRRRRRGH I SWEAR TO GOD IF I ALMOST GET CRUSHED BY SOME DUDE IN AN SUV WITHOUT SNOW TIRES SCREECHING SIDEWAYS DOWN THE STREET AND ONTO A SIDEWALK ONE MORE TIME I'M GOING TO EXPLODE.
5. The damn snowstorm that's been going on since BEFORE ETERNITY it seems, and my roof is about to collapse.

raw raw fight da powah go idaho

2)  Flat.....very very flat

Radical_Dreamer I assume you live in seattle?  I'm moving out there in July for my job.  Funny story though for my second interview they flew me out there and the absolute first thing I noticed is that NOONE CAN DRIVE it was horrible withing 2 minutes of leaving the airport I was pissed.  I honestly think it's just cause people out there are not aggressive drivers/too nice so they were all letting people in.

I actually brought it up in my interview and the guy said that one time it snowed and people actually just left their cars in the road and got out and walked at some places.

Congratulations! It's a lovely area, and I haven't looked back since I moved up here. If I may enquire, what are you going to be doing?

On the few days a year we get snow, it's terrible. No one has any idea what to do. I have a couple friends from Minnesota. They find it all very amusing.

Very cool. I know several people who work at Microsoft, and they all like it there. Redmond is nice.
