Guild Idea
« on: July 08, 2008, 02:46:05 pm »
FaustWolf and I were discussing how to credit ROM hackers and other fan project artists, since progress in decoding and hacking games is of vast importance to the Chrono community. I had the idea to perhaps create a special membergroup on the forums; to sort of "officialize" membership in Kajar Laboratories.

Like the situation with other groups, membership in this one would give users a special rank and rank image on the left, distinguishing them as members. Members can elect not to have this special rank if they'd rather have the regular postcount ranks.

If we did this, an awful lot of people would be grandfathered in who have already contributed to the community, and then a thread would be established for applying for membership. Perhaps a special list on the Modification page would list members. To get in, an applicant would have to do something simple, like track down some offsets, collection animations for a few Chrono Trigger NPCs, identify the content a few Cross files, or release some kind of mini-thing, or even just provide some helpful advice; who knows.

So, what does it sound like? The special rank icon would probably be a Frozen Flame, and the rank might be the currently defunct Architect of Kajar designation. FEEDBACK!

I think the Director in charge of a Project should be given the status, and whoever s/he chooses to have the logo or icon can have it.  For example, I would hate to see myself with the logo, then I disappear for six months and reappear still with the logo, even though I don't deserve it.

I also think there should be multiple titles, such as Director, Programmer, etc., just like a real video game.  That way we all know what each other does.

The "Director" structure would be best used within Fan Projects, especially Aegis projects like Crimson Echoes, whereas there's a lot of independent game file exploration going on in Kajar Labs. On the other hand, many of the people doing stuff in Kajar are also members of fan projects, so there's a lot of overlapping activities.
Man, this is complex.

I like the idea of the Frozen Flame icon, since that's the symbol of Kajar now via its official logo. I take it there would not be ranks within this member guild, to keep things simple and "Knights-of-the-Round-Table"-like?

Or you could place in your side bar everything you are involved in?  Just a thought, because it could end up sloppy.

For instance, one person's could look something like this:

Crimson Echoes, Supervisor
CC:DBT, Director, Scenario Writer
CT+, Programmer

That way we know what all projects they're involved in and in what capacity.  But as I said, that could actually end up being a horrible idea, because it could end up making things crammed and unorganized.

It'd take an SMF hack, too, which is beyond my ability. SMF can be really jumpy about what groups a member is in, since it deals with permissions.
