Fishing
« on: July 27, 2008, 09:02:08 am »
Just off on a completely un-chrono-related topic, does anyone here go fishing. Since late last year this past time has overtaken all others. I no longer consider myself a gamer like I once did, I do enjoy programming and drawing but would trade them any day for an afternoon down at a dam sneaking around looking for trout.

Just wondered if anyone fishes around here :) if so what sort, fly, spin, boat etc.

Anglers represent!

Okay, so on the pier I use a Nordek 3.5-inch Glassweight without double hocks but with a spline tackle—unorthodox, but more intellectual, I find. That’s if I’m going for loach or smelt. Otherwise, it’s a Tennyson Halfpiece, plain, since the only other fish around here worth catching are pink. In all cases, I like to lowball my line strength by about thirty percent. Bait’s a matter of freshness, although I’ve had good success with kelp-farmed herring.

On the water, I cruise in a Mirada three-hull kingfisher with dual Evinrude 550 horsepower sterndrives on the pontoons and a Chevy Herodotus 9000 on the main hull. All the steering is hand-wired, because that’s how I swing. For the fish, I use a Jelethon 8 Fast Sonar when I’m catching bass. For marlin I use the weather report. For tuna and lingcod I just go where the sweet spots are. I use a number of rods, but my runaway favorite is the Nordek Oceanpole, 7-inch version. I usually fish on 30-, 50-, or 80-pound line with triple hooks and whatever “Velveeta” I think the fish I’m after are going to most enjoy that day.

If I’m freshwater fishing, I’ll just take a piece of wood, tie some string to it, and skewer a worm or some fisherman’s cheese to a single- or dual-hook on the other end. Whatever.

I've only fished twice in my life.  Never caught a thing.  At least real fishing.

Now that I live in seattle I would LOVE to start fishing.  Fishing gear is on my list of things to buy soon.

Just off on a completely un-chrono-related topic
Just so you know, we should have less Chrono-related topics in the GD board.

I've just found it be a fantastic way to get away from work, uni and other commitments and relax. To tell the truth I don't catch a whole bundle of fish, but I think that's the great secret of fishing - most of the time you don't catch fish!

I'm mainly a trout, golden perch fisherman, but I've attempted to go after tailor, bream and flat-head. I don't get to the beach/estuaries often enough though.

The satisfaction of a good cast while fly fishing and then managing to deceive the wary trout causing him/her to suck on your carefully constructed imitation really is amazing.

Y'know, fishing was basically the only RPG cliché left out of Chrono Trigger...hell, even FFVI had a minor fishing sequence~!! Hmmm...maybe that's why...Weird though that they didn't truly implement it in Chrono Cross even though one of the characters uses a FISHING ROD as a weapon!!! >_<

Here's to hoping the new dungeon's a fishing hole!

I'm not too big on fishing.

When I was 8 years old, I caught a stingray at the beach. The angle it came out of the water caused the line to wrap around my face and the stingray stung me right above the eye. The doctor said I was lucky to be able to see.

Nevertheless, I woulodn't mind going fishing in a lake. I just stay away from beach-fishing. I caught a pretty big bass, I think it was about 12" in a lake near my house. Oh my fucking god you guys her it comes...

I...   ...have bad luck with fishing.  My line will always jam, resulting in a big wirey mess that often simply has to be cut. :(   now, my luck with a gun is considerably better. I can hit a target of about 50 feet pretty well and quite accurately with a rifle, and I'm working on aim with a slingshot. Also, I applied the tried and true "Final Fantasy" method of Archery to a bow, and nailed a bullseye last time. So, I think I'm a better with hunting tools than I am fishing tools.
