Mike Van Jovi from Radical Dreamers
« on: November 07, 2008, 08:51:54 am »
Can anyone tell me what's the origin of this name? Maybe some guitarist, I guess, well, just kidding.

When I read the Janpanese script several weeks ago, and found his name(トウバンジャン/Taubanjan, or in Chinese phonetic alphabet, Doubanjiang) actually means thick bean sauce or bean paste. I laughed so badly that my nose almost hit the keyboard...

It's probably Mick from Mick Jagger and van Jovi seems to be a play on Bon Jovi. Saying it aloud could produce a light food pun since it sounds vaguely like anchovy, but that's really reaching.

No idea about the Japanese name, though.

Taubanjan or tōbanjan and doubanjiang are names for some kind of spicy bean sauce. So I'd assume it's a nod to Binegar and the Japanese names of the Mystic knights. That would make maggiekarp's theory sound pretty legit, since Binegar and co. had their names changed to musicians'.

Anyhow, good find utunnels, that name put a smile on my face...and here I was thinking Binegar sounded foolish.

Yeah, translation is an interesting thing. Sometimes you just can't use the original meaning. Something might sound funny to someone, but not make sense at all to others, even if he/she search it in a dictionary.
So I think Mike Van Jovi must mean something, although it doesn't make sense to me at all. XD
