No offense... but why would Lavos want to share power?  He can destroy humanity, so why spare anyone?  And Lavos isn't exactly friends with Zeal.  He hates the fact Zeal tried to use him.  There is no reason for him to keep them.
But I agree with you that the BO is not strong enough to handle an attack.

Who said he was sharing the power? And even if it was: why not? Lavos was looking for DNA, not "power". If giving power to something else with the intent of fending off some immediate danger meant Lavos didn't have to do it, Lavos'd probably go for it.

It still disturbs me that the Black Omen wasn't struck down though...  the altitude would have to be incredibly high to withstand Lavos' damnation of the planet.  He shoots things up so the Black Omen would have to be really conviently placed not to be hit, or just feakishly high.

Or, since the Black Omen is fueled by Lavos' power, it's simply uneffected by his blasts. It seems to me that the Black Omen serves some kind of usefulness to Lavos. Perhaps, if he's sentient, he craves no more from the Black Omen than the worship it offers him. It serves as a testament to his power. Maybe he intended the Black Omen to travel with his Spawn to other planets and keep them safe? Who the hell knows?

It could even be a fail safe of some kind. You know when the Ocean Palace first appears, it blurs in and out. It could actually be protecting Lavos in a way so that he can exist in the pocket dimension while at the same time having it outside so he can use it to pull himself directly out of the pocket dimension rather than having to erupt all the time. It may even be the cause that even if Lavos is defeated from all of time, Zeal will still be destroyed.
