Wow, come to think of it Mav, that dialogue does make sense for Una being a boy! And while I still think the in-game portrait looks feminine, that sketch really does clinch the designer's original intent.

I still say Leena dresses him up funny for kicks though.

Una...
No one knew it was guy?
I knew it mostly cause it's been easier to tell the difference since a girl I know reads mangas where more often than not everyone looks like a girl).
But I might be wrong but i think he also made a reference to liking some girl in the village also. Or maybe I'm thinking of someone else. But yeah, I'm kinda startled!

I wonder if there's a cultural difference in the way we perceived Una's gender? It's pretty clear that most NA players perceived Una as a girl, even though no mention of it was specifically made. She seemed like the typical tough-talking tomboy from the start for me.

However, I wonder if JP players generally perceived Una as male instead? Anyone have any insights?
I made a polling in another site(not English community), and few thought Una was a girl.
So maybe, the localizer should have pick a more boyish name for him. LOL

I believe you're thinking of the kid by the right set of huts who you can give the Komodo Scale from the fisherman after listening to his story about the giant swordfish he caught.

   Hey, Sergey!
   Do you know what's
   popular among the village
   girls these days?
   A necklace made from
   Komodo dragon scales!
   You know, those monsters
   that eat fire!
I want to get some for
   Kiki, but there's no
   way I can beat those
   monsters...
   Ohhhh nooo!
   If I don't do something
   about this now, Kiki
   might start liking Lolo!

   Boy...
   Am I in a fix...

So Una`s dialogs don`t specify a gender.

What about other dialogs about him. Maybe someone else said he was a girl. Leena, their grandmother, Miguel, less probably someone else in Arni. Or no?

I looked through Miguel's dialog--he doesn't say too much, but he does mention Leena specifically. No one in the game refers to Una by name though...

Now, that's only through hitting the search button on the Chrono Cross script...I guess it's possible that there a portions missing from the script, but I doubt anyone has said anything about Una.

There's only one mention of Una by name by another person in Chrono Cross.

Doesn't help much, right?

Whoops, I meant no one in the game refers to Una by gender--and is that the only time she's mentioned by name? Unbelievable. She's seeming less and less significant by the minute.

Oi. Minor edit required.

Miguel was missing 14 years ago, right?
Considering Una's age...

To be honest I've never even thought about it. I assumed it was a girl, but him being a boy doesn't really surprise me either. He's a character with no significance at all.

I agree, after reading through the script I realized just how insignificant Una was. And to think, some people thought he was gonna be a playable character.
Miguel was missing 14 years ago, right?

Hmmm...how old is Una anyway? Age is listed as indeterminate, but I always thought Una was a preteen. Miguel didn't even mention Una after you fight him...It's almost like they aren't even related. Dun dun dun!

Or, he left on his journey with Wazuki before the mother knew she was pregnant, and as such he never knew.

I was being a little sarcastic, but yes, that's quite true. I just find it strange that so much about Una is left unexplained or ambiguous. Leena's family really isn't described too much anyway: we know Miguel and Leena, we've seen grandma and Una, and I believe Leena's mother was mentioned off-hand.

I always found it odd that they bothered to make a portrait for such an insignificant character. I can understand they did one for Serge's mom, Lisa, and other important NPC's, but I don't see why they would make one for an NPC that doesn't have anything to do with anything.

And his Compendium page needs an update lol http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Una.html
