But seriously, looks like just energy to me. May probably be it... but who knows...

Though, is the thing at the center of the 'ring' suppose to be something in specific?

I always thought it as an aethetic decision by the artist. But if I had to guess, it would be the underwater scene at Chrono Cross's intro, specifically the light bubbles in the cavern. Here are some screenshots.

Yeah, I've never quite been able to figure that out. It seems sort of like the underwater scene from the title screen... but is that design at the top just steam, or some kind of strange above-side view of a headless human skeleton? And is that Schala in the middle, or just a mass of bubbles?
