Saturday Variety Update!
« on: February 26, 2011, 07:41:04 pm »
It's been a couple weeks, so let's get things rolling!

[OFFICIAL]  g4tv recently interviewed Square Enix about toys, and the interviewer brought up the popularity of the recent Chrono Trigger figurines. The Square Enix representative noted about new merchandise: "...because there were so many different people involved in that project, and it’s an older game, he said it’s really up to the fans to let Square Enix know that they want more of them." Thanks to V_Translanka for the heads up.  [2]  The Smithsonian is deciding which games to showcase as essential to history! Be sure to vote for Chrono Trigger here. (Thanks Kara for reminding us!)  [3]  Romana has found a Chrono Trigger reference in Final Fantasy XIII. On the Nautilus, an NPC says, "I wanna go to the Fiendlord's Keep!" Thanks for finding this!

[MERCHANDISE]  Guru of Time Angerona tracked down a little-known artbook called "ANVIL III. The Man in the High Castle", featuring works by Nobuteru Yuki. Awesomely, there are a couple of Chrono Cross scenes from the development process! Head on over to Official Art (Chrono Cross) to check it out! There are three small captions that also need to be translated; easy, easy stuff! Thanks again to Angerona for another achievement in a long line of triumphs for Chrono merchandise.  [2]  Angerona has provided some better pictures of the Serge and Karsh diorama sold at the Tokyo Game Show for Chrono Cross, as well as the Chrono Trigger Formation Arts figurines. Find them here and here.

[CT UNGLUED]  Clovis15 and the team have been making consistently awesome releases during this long period without site updates. The Compendium has added all the new episodes, which you can find at the feature anchor here. Tons of thanks and appreciation to the CTU team; it takes determination and the springtime of youth to keep a fan work rolling at full speed!  [2]  Clovis15 is now looking for voice actors for a Youtube voice track version of Chrono Trigger: Unglued. Check out the thread here!  [SHOOTER]  Speaking of up and coming projects, sephiroth976 has released a demo for a Touhou style shooter called Chrono Battle. Find the thread here (feedback encouraged) and the demo here.

[OTHER]  utunnels finished a bevy of new rank icons! The post ranks are finally complete. Check them out across the forums!  [2]  mysticalpha's new comic is out: Pushing My Buttons!  [3]  Thanks to utunnels (and no thanks to my ignorance of Roman Holiday), we've discovered that the Mouth of Truth in Radical Dreamers is based on a real sculpture in Rome, with a similar legend. Check out the entry here.  [4]  fantasyanime_guy (of fantasyanime.com) has done an amazing 3D render wallpaper of the Epoch Launch cut scene from Chrono Trigger PSX, complete with some behind-the-scenes looks. Check it all out here!

[A TREAT...]  We have a HUGE treat to start the fan update off with: the return of Fuee! Recognize the name? He's the total badass who made THIS, which you may know as the very face of the Prophet's Guile ROM hack, and used for the SPC music collection from the game! He's back with Harle and Steena. Great to see you again!  [FAN ART] First up is Licawolf, who's been awesomely busy! [ Radical Dreamers - Snowing! - Radical Dreamers - Aaaahhhh! - Angelus Errare ]  [2]  After that is AMapp, who has some physical Crono art! [ One - Two ]  [3]  Kidd Strife is next with an amazing Chrono Cross tattoo by artist Scott Fitt! Check it out here.  [4]  PACC submitted a fierce Lavos battle; check it out here and see the behind-the-scenes look here!  [FAN FICTION]  tushantin's submitted a lyrical piece called Cyrus, the Hero; find it here!  [2]  From GenesisOne comes a new episode of Real World: Chrono Trigger!  [REMIX WATCH]  'The Frog Dance' by DJ Velly - 'Another Madness' by Hakstock - 'Corridors of Time' by TheReverend - 'Elevator of Zeal' by Gario - 'Corridors of Time Live' by Walkmountain

I'm loving the ANVIL III sketches, it's so interesting to see the illustrations in progress, also I love the pencil work.

I'm curious about some of the changes done during the process, in one of the images of el Nido Water, Serge is holding a knife in his mouth instead of a key like in the final version, I guess maybe it was decided the knife was an item more related to Kid... um, did that picture represented a particular scene in the game? I don't remember at the moment.

Also I think I liked more the idea of Serge standing instead of sitting in the Dragon Isle scene.

I always loved the Viper Manor illustration but these two previous sketches are so different... I'm not sure if I like them even more. The first one is much more dynamic than the final version and the second one is totally static(Kid is not even struggling in this one), I guess the final version is in the middle of the two. But I really like these two previous versions, Lynx is all over Kid in the first one, notice how even his clothes somehow surround her, trapping her. And the second version makes Lynx look totally imposing and even creepy (Kid looks defeated here).

I'm always curious about these kind of process, I would have loved to know what were the justifications behind some of the changes.

Thank you, Angerona, for this excellent discovery  :D

You're welcome ^^, I'm glad I could contribute to the Compendium somehow.  :)
