I can imagine that Lavos started absorbing Schala sub-counciously because he needed a power source to keep him alive.

@Legend
It is understandable that Robo could scan them, but what about the other characters, they make statements in a way that it seemed like they knew all this all along.

An alien from an entirely other Planet suddenly looks humanoind. And based on all their knowledge, they could do the math and understand that he gots loads of DNA.

Or maybe the DNA is really big...or like, Lavos accidentally put up some signs showing in detail what it was doing...but it's all in the foreground where we can't see.

Well, since all the characters know that he was collecting DNA to make himself powerful, it might not just be the scanners, but maybe they can acctually feel it when they figt Lavos. Like maybe the presence of another person that they know, the characteristics etc.

You're not far-off. Ayla says that Lavos' Humanoid form smells like Crono, and Ayla and Kino, and everyone she knows, and then she understands he smells like everything that ever lived.

Besides, Humans can still feel things of spiritual power. They can sense Lavos is evil, but they can also sense that this thing has the very essence of everyone they ever knew, themselves included, in him.

Yea. Lavos did give me that eerie Cthullu feeling. Hey, though. Our heroes can cast MAGIC and stuff. They can pull any surprises out of their little bums.

Perhaps it's to be interpreted as the DNA of every species of living thing on the planet and not specifically everything that was ever alive.

oo so it would just be like he has the DNA of a human instead of the DNA of every human?

like he just has human DNA not like Crono, Marle, and the groups DNA

DNA is not everything. Kid has Schala's DNA yet she's not as powerful with magic as Schala is... Moreover Gaspar says something like how the party is powered by the dreams of every living creatures they met. Queen Zeal claims on the contrary that Lavos is dreamless, so...
