Chrono Cross: A few things set up rather deceptively!
« on: August 30, 2005, 12:02:58 am »
So, I'm on my third playthrough on Chrono Cross. And, I notice something about the differences between the worlds, and how a few things are different than you'd expect them to be. (First two playthroughs, I didn't really pay attention to the differences, or simply got confused between them).

First off, in Home World, the cheerful, tropical "Fields of Time" theme plays on the map, and you have the even more energetic "Voyage ~ Home World," playing when you sail.

Why does this seem odd to me? Home World is the world in which:
-The Viper clan leaves for the Dead Sea and gets lost,
-Viper Manor crumbles to the ground,
-Termina becomes occupied by Porre,
-The Demi-Humans are enslaved on the S.S. Zelbess after they must flee from Marbule because of the Black Dream,
-The ruins of the future reside in the Dead Sea,

and most importantly,

-Home World is the world that becomes destroyed because of Serge!

The only good things about Home World are:
-The Hydra Marshes weren't initially polluted,
-Arni Village is relatively well-off, compared to Termina,

and

-Water Dragon and Earth Dragon Isles still have their Dragon Gods.

So, why do they have such cheerful music playing in the background?!

In contrast, Another World is the world in which:
-The Viper clan still resides on El Nido,
-Porre does NOT take over,
-The demi-humans keep their homeland, Marbule,

and

-Chronopolis still resides in the Sea of Eden,

Despite all of that, the sad theme "Dream of Another Shore" plays on the El Nido island.

The only sad things that happened in Another World are:

-Pollution of the Hydra Marshes,
-Water Dragon and Earth Dragon Islands suffer the abscence of their dragons,

and

-The Isle of the Damned incident between Karsh and Dario.

...

My question to you is this: why do you suppose the producers gave the cheerful map themes to the doomed world, and the brooding map theme to the world that continues to live on?

I think its just because its Serge's homeword.  As he is the main character of the game, they likely want to give him a happy, more upbeat theme.

Maybe it has something to do w/the fact that Home World isn't supposed to exist...
