Sege & Lynx: Body Trading
« on: September 01, 2005, 09:00:42 pm »
Here's another question I've had since even my first playthrough of Chrono Cross, regarding the semantics of the body trade between Serge & Lynx.

Here's what we know:

When Serge got Lynx's body, he also adopted the innate of Lynx's body, changing from white to black.

When Lynx got Serge's body, Lynx kept his black innate, and thus making Serge's original body black, making it "Dark Serge," and then started dressing like a goth.

My questions:

Why WOULD Lynx keep his original black innate even when getting Serge's body, when Serge DID NOT keep his white innate?

Why would Serge's body adopt Lynx's original black innate, when Serge didn't give Lynx's original body a white innate?

Furthermore, why would Lynx transform Serge's body into Dark Serge, when Serge didn't transform Lynx's body into Light Lynx?

Hmm...most of your questions are very interesting, and I'm always not sure how to answer them. The only thing I could think of perhaps might be the willpower between the two. Lynx seemed to know this would happen and might have known a bit more of the mechanics of how it worked, and Serge had no idea what was going on and seemed to be at a state of mental weakness when it happened (I.e him clutching his head and falling to the ground in pain). Lynx seemed to truly invade Serge's body, even injecting a bit of himself so that it's innate was altered. Whereas, it seems that Serge is just inhabiting the body.

That's the best I got, though don't take my word (as there are probably a ton of holes in it XD)

Erm, well, you see its very complicated.  You see, the temporal flux axiom interfaces with the flux capacitor to create a dynametric flow through the chrono...

Ehh, you know what - it was magic.

Lynx is part FATE and FATE likes to ufck w/stuff. I think normally such a change would result in an Innate change, but Lynx was too uber-cool fo that and thus changed his back to black.

Is the Serge you fight (when you fight your party) on the top of Dragonia Black or White Innate anyway?

That's a good question; just right after the body switch, the clothes on Serge's body remained the same even after Lynx migrated to Serge's body, and I believe the innate of Serge's body was still white.

Sometime after Dark Serge (Lynx) throws Serge (in Lynx's body) into a trans-dimensional gateway, Dark Serge (Lynx) eventually changes his clothes, and gets a black innate. The change of clothes is apparent, when, we see Dark Serge attack Hermit's Hideaway when Serge (in Lynx's body) returns to Another World after the Dead Sea/Tower of Geddon scenario.

When we finally fight Dark Serge on our second trip to Fort Dragonia, to gain Serge's original body back, we finally see that Dark Serge has a black innate.

...

BTW, we know Lynx (an envoy of the FATE computer) needed Serge's body for something, but what purpose was that again?

Serge is the arbiter of the frozen flame, so FATE needed his body to regain control of it.

You should quote that GameFAQs topic instead of linking to it, because it will be purged later.

That link and its content weren't worth !@#$%^& anyway, and certainly didn't answer my question.

Thanks for trying, though.

Just remember that anything written on GameFAQs' boards are of little value or consequence.

Good point.  Except...

...it doesn't look like it's worth bothering!  Sorry!  I didn't screen the GameFAQs thread.  I simply remembered that I had seen the topic on that site.

Harle:
   Regarding your mémoire
   az zis Serge...
You may be able to rewrite it
if you use ze Dragon Tear.

That's from when you meet up with Harle in that strange tower place in the dimensional vortex... From that, I've always come to the conclusion that Serge inherited Lynx's memories, Lynx inherited Serge's memories, and that using the other Dragon Tear would rewrite Serge's memories with his original memories and the memories from being inside Lynx, and the same for Lynx with his memories being inside Serge. A lot of people disagree with this for no particular reason, but they're stupid.

So, anyway, although it doesn't have much to do with my real answer, I thought I'd share that... again.
Serge seems to be a very passive character, even more so than Crono because he just seems to follow Kid around. Lynx is very active, as it seems (OMG THEY'RE VOICES OF VERBS), so I guess it could be that his lust for the flame or w/e fuels him overrides the body's natural form (I'm sure Wazuki wasn't dark-elemental before Lynx), and Serge's body is just naturally light-innate, so Serge's memories just follow whatever form his body is (what came from the sea has returned to the sea... OMG SERGE IS MAGICALLY ENCHANTED WATER!?)

Yes, I used OMG twice in a post. I am doomed. Now it's thrice (OMG I said 'thrice'!). Is there a 4x version of 'twice/thrice'? I could use that right about now...

You totally misinterpretted that quote. It's wrong. What Harle meant was that, using the Dragon Tear, Serge could recreate his body by the power of his memory. Where do you get this crap about inheriting each other's memories?

I guess recreating his body makes sense with the cutscene and how Lynx stays as Dark Serge (I think he's Dark Serge in Chronopolis...)
I don't see how one tear would switch 2 bodies, and the other would recreate a body... I guess you win for now, though..

Yes, FATE still has the Dark Serge body in Chronopolis, while the real Serge gets his old body back.

Which makes me ask,

why did Lynx have to trade bodies with Serge at all? Couldn't Lynx just have simulated Serge's body? I mean, Lynx's Dark Serge body is pretty much different from Serge's actual body anyway, after his Dark energy taints it! Why would the lock on the Frozen Flame recognize Dark Serge as the real Serge?

It's probable that the Frozen Flame changes the DNA of someone. So whatever FATE tried, they could not simulate it for it was the Frozen Flames pesonal registration key thingy, connected to Prometheus.
