Toxic Chrono community?
« on: December 05, 2021, 08:17:16 am »
I've always been a fan of the Chrono series and this website. At one point I would stop by this website multiple times a day. So long story short Chrono compendium has always had a special place in my heart. Well, I remember in 2017 or 2018 this site went down. Truly, I was panicking that I may never be able to access this wonderful website ever again. I even posted something on this form about it. But, I've never been to active with the forum though. But, then someone commented saying something along the lines of, "It's people like me that are the reason this website was dying". I'm writing this because even to this day that spiteful comment has somehow still tainted my enjoyment of this website and the Chrono series. So please when any of you post a reply to a comment on something... don't be rude about it. Because for me it forever changed how I viewed the Chrono community as being nothing more then toxic.

Stoicism helps with insults.

Quote
Epictetus: If a person gave your body to any stranger he met on his way, you would certainly be angry. And do you feel no shame in handing over your own mind to be confused and mystified by anyone who happens to verbally attack you?

You wouldn't hand over autonomy over your body to random jerks on the street; neither should we hand over our mind, or our enjoyment of something.

  • When you give someone a gift and they keep it, it remains a gift. When you give someone a gift and they return it, it is no longer a gift.
  • When you give someone an insult and they take it personally, it remains an insult. When you give someone an insult and they are completely dismissive of it or even amused by it, what is it then? Who is insulted at that point? (The person trying to insult you! They've completely failed at their goal.)

Sadly some take that instead as a challenge to double down in trying to rile people up. So it also takes some effort on one's part to maintain the stoicism I'd say.

I totally agree with ZeaLitY and Acacia Sgt's messages. But I wanted to see if I could find where this was coming from. I'm guessing this is the message, a reply to one of yours, that is seen as spiteful:
Quote
Ironically, there are many members that remain silent, like yourself, and do not post, unfortunately creating the illusion that it is deserted, when in reality, that's not as true as it appears.

I would just take those words at face value! It's an explanation for why the site can appear deserted sometimes. I think the point of it is just to explain that it will not appear deserted if we have activity--and activity is something each of us does spontaneously. So just go ahead and continue to post with the Chrono things on your mind, and the illusion of desertion must fade in response. :-)

(Immediately following the above message, the author wrote: "I'm not trying to point fingers, just shining light on the fact.")

Yeah, I don't think the author meant any offense at you, nor were they referring to you being part of the problem. I think it was more of a general statement that at the end of the day, our activity as a whole is what keeps this place going. When one person comments more, we all comment more.

Regardless, glad you've stuck around.

It's funny you mention this... I think it was roughly around that time (maybe later?) I remarked on issues in the Discord, which, by the way, is in MUCH better condition now.

Atharyne, I hope you have a much better experience in the future.

My friend has some education in psychology and has helped me with a few things of no small import. One such thing he instilled upon me was to "pretend not to care."

If you do not react, trolls get bored. I've done it myself lately, and it does work. It all comes down to what sword you want to fall on.

Nowadays, the worst I've seen comes from the facebook groups. I kinda distanced myself from one of them, though, so I don't know how bad it is right now.

Well, I'm only wiser because I learned from my stupid past actions. Put it that way.

Social Media is run by algorithms. Algorithms that are designed to cause engagement no matter the cost. Fear, anger, anxiety, conflict, vanity - they all drive engagement, and in turn ad revenue and money. Do not fall into the trap.
