CHRONO TRIGGER COLISEUM
« on: October 26, 2005, 12:55:24 am »
The latest Chrono Trigger modification and by far, the most original and inventive, the Chrono Trigger Coliseum has been released by JP and Cory. The Coliseum, a battle arena located in 2300 A.D., allows players and fans of the game to spend time battling three different ladders of monsters to gain experience and "battle points," which can be redeemed in the arena for good prizes. Three modes of difficulty are available -- easy, medium, and hard -- and each ladder can be tried with both a full paty or a single member. You read correctly; you can solo these ladders, choosing a single party member at will to fight -- even Magus! The action spans three rooms, each utilizing a pulse-pounding battle theme to set the mood. Each set of monsters consists of seven battles, each harder than the first. The hard difficulty is particularly difficult, though the battle point rewards are much higher. Additionally, to support the needs of earnest fighters in the coliseum, a shop and kitchen exist.

The Chrono Trigger Coliseum is nearly flawlessly integrated with the main game, meaning you can play a normal game of Chrono Trigger without any noticeable changes aside from the Coliseum itself. You can visit any time after the Factory dungeon is cleared to pick up items and test your skills; a substantial prize awaits for those who can beat the hard difficulties with party and solo modes! The perfect place to test your might, the Coliseum offers a new challenge to old veterans and breathes new life into the renowned battle system of Chrono Trigger. It is also arguably the most complicated event hack of the game to date, serving as indisputable proof that the Temporal Flux editor indeed has unlocked countless opportunities for reshaping the game. Rounding out the experience of Trigger with a battle arena, it is one of the most unique RPG modifications to date, and will endure long hours of skill testing and might building.

Before you download the hack, we have good news: the Chrono Compendium is hosting a competition to see who can beat both party and solo modes on the hard difficulty first! The competition is called 'Heir to the Masamune'; if you're eager to play through the Coliseum, waste no time and try the Hard difficulty! If you think you can take it, enter in the contest and compete to become the 'Heir'! Only ZSNES and extreme determination are needed! You can find all the details at http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Heir_to_the_Masamune ! The winner will receive a special forum rank on the Compendium, and will be posted on the contest page henceforth! Additionally, after the Heir is chosen, other entrants who beat Hard on both Party and Solo modes will be judged by their time and level to be posted on two scoreboards. This means that even if you miss obtaining the title of 'Heir', you can still do a better performance by beating hard with lower levels than he or she did, or beating it with a faster time. Start your engines!

Before you download, PLEASE make a note to read the readme, as important information is contained within. Also, don't miss the contest! We will find the true hero! Now, sate your battling desires, and good luck!

Man, that sounds  pretty freakin sweet...I think I have a clean Chrono Trigger ROM too...Hmm...But wait...what if someone uses a Save State or some kind of gameshark cheat or something?

I tried using one of my previous save states from the normal game, but it makes it all bugged up (ie. people aren't there, some dialog is messed up I think), and it's even the same with the normal in-game save. Which means I'll actually have to play through until I get past the lab just to get in there with it being non-buggy (and even then, I don't know if it'll work properly).

Oh, it'd be nice if you spelt it "colosseum" instead of the other way, but since both are accepted, I won't bitch about it :)

I like this! Imagine if people gathered together to add all the features removed from the Prerelease...  :P

Awesome. I can't help thinking why the Gran Slam Tournament in Chrono Cross was sooo limited. They could have made it like this Coliseum or the one in FFVII instead of having only 3 battles.

Well, that's one plus. We can copy the coliseum anywhere.

Dirtie,

Did you talk to the NPC in proto DOME to reset everything?  I believe that this question is addressed in the readme.

For a technicall answer, if you use a save state then the memory location that I'm using for the Coliseum is not what I want it to be.  By talking to that NPC it resets it to the value that I use.

Is it just me or does that NPC seem really sad? I mean, he's there in an empty dome (for god knows how long) and he's got a dialogue box, but no dialogue! >_> I think it should be some kind of innanimate object instead of a guy...Or maybe a Nu!

It was weird when I first got to that dome and I got into that battle near the NPC...after the battle he turned into some numbers >_> but after I did the battle up above and just off screen, he turned back...

jsondag2, to lazy to log in at work

The thing with that NPC is because all of the strings are used up there, and it's a different string index then the directors ending (what I replaced for the Coliseum) we couldn't simply replace an existing string.   At first we were going to just put his code in an existing NPC but we thought people would just be confused if we said "to reactivate the Coliseum talk to the NPC that says

Someone is living in the abandoned dome by Death Peak"

If I could assure that noone was going to use Save States to skip most of the game than we wouldn't need the Coliseum Cause all of the code that usually runs when you talk to the NPC is also ran when you recruit Robo.

Sorry for getting technical, I do that with stuff like this...alot haha

Nice!

But, sady, I don't have a Chrono Trigger ROM(and would likely never will... I got the real game(PSX, but who CARES!?)).

Though, I will congrats who ever get to be the "Heir to the Masamune."! :P

whenever I load a saved game it freezes when I try to go to 2300ad. When I try to start a new game, after you name crono the game freezes.

Your ROM could be badly interleaved, I think. Or, you applied the wrong patch. Anyway, just get a new one and try it out with the headered patch.

Urgh, how can you stand that port? I have the real, SNES version for the win, baby!

Anyways yeah, it's pretty fun for the few minutes I've had to play it (I was evicted from the comp shortly after patching my freshly downloaded ROM)
