I did it! Solo Magus vs. Magus!
« on: November 21, 2005, 04:39:57 am »
I for one have wanted to see this happen for years.  And, with a combination of info from this site, the classic GG codes, and plain dumb luck, I've finally pulled it off...a SOLO Magus vs. Magus battle!  And I've got the savestate to prove it, if anyone's willing to host.

Here's how you can pull it off.

Step 1: Load any advanced savestate and put Magus in the first position in your party.  Go to 1000 AD Truce.

Step 2: Enter the following code and activate it.  This resets the event counter to just before Magus' battle.
7f000089 (Ozzie Defeated)

Step 3: Enter the Truce Market, then enter these codes.  After that, walk around in circles within the Market for a bit.
c0102cda (???)
c09b47ff (Walk Thru Walls)

Step 4: You will appear in a wall near the midpoint of Magus' Castle.  Walk through the wall towards the exit to your left.  Enter it, then turn the last two codes off.  A word of warning: even with those codes off, backtracking in the Castle, or pressing "down" in the wrong place, can cause you to go to an unexpected location such as Manoria Cathedral.

Step 5: Fight through Magus' Castle until you reach the Inner Sanctum and approach Magus...

Step 6: When you see the line, "Frog: Magus!!", then enter these codes and activate both of them.
7e2981ee
7e2982ee
This step empties the 2nd and 3rd positions in the active party.  Those characters will be "erased" until you turn the codes back off.

Step 7: Enjoy!

Nice work. You got someone to fight themself. This way we can see, who is the better? The more levelled up Magus, or the original, previous and far inferior Magus. Obviously, we will win. Now we can seeLets all rejoice, come over to my house, and play Panzer Dragoon Orta. One at a time.

I sense a little sarcasm there, Zeppelin.   :)

Okay, so the battle usually doesn't end up lasting too long, and Magus always wins.  BUT, this is something that CT hackers have been trying to pull off for ages--just look at any CT board, including this one, for the proof of that.

Still working on a way to get the 2nd Magus vs. Magus meeting to happen...

maybe you should try the colloseum, then use fight alone by using magus, walk through walls, even code, and then just pwn ya through the castle. haven't tried it, because these codes doesnt work(or im just to stupid to insert/activate them, and thats prolly it)

Well, if you're talking about the codes I listed, it's possible they won't all work--there are different versions of CT after all.

Will have to check out the Coloseum (waiting on V.2...)

'Trying to pull off for ages'? Anyone who has read any information on even the basics of savestate or ram modification could do this.

You're thinking too small--I wanted to discover a solution that works on carts as well.  Believe it or not, I play CT on the SNES.  And yes, this procedure does work on it.

I doubt very much that anyone with "even a basic understanding of savestate and RAM modification could do this."  Two reasons: first, people have been trying a LONG time to make it possible.  I found five topics on Magus vs. Magus amongst the seven CT boards I checked, including this one--and no one, anywhere, has made public a way to do this.  The info simply isn't available.  Maybe this HAS been done before, but it hasn't been made public.  Second, this wasn't possible until the position of the storyline counter in the RAM was discovered and deciphered--and that's been a relatively recent development.

And even if all of you think that doing this was a waste of time, consider: I had to customize and test three additional codes of my own to make this possible, which took nearly 3 hours.  And if nothing else, the final two codes I've listed above affect how many people are in your party at once.  This is something that no one's discovered how to do until now.  You won't have to use the "Lucca/Red Gate/Walk Thru Walls" trick recorded on this website anymore to affect this.  So if you all want to diss my work, at least recognize it had some utility.

I find it amusing that as soon as someone does something like this, everyone else simultaneously talks about how it's not a worthwhile accomplishment and brags about how they could have done it.  Several people on this board seem to have stuck in their heads the idea that just because they've been visiting the Chrono Compendium for a while, they know a lot more about CT than all newbies.  Talk about a false elitist attitude.

Finally, I did this just for fun people.  And because I found it to be a worthwhile challenge.  Get off my back.

Chill. Congratulations, you found a (convoluted) way to do it on an snes, I'm happy for you. Everyone needs to start somewhere. The fact remains, however, that this is a very easy feat:

0x3593 is the offset for the first PC (00 is Crono, 06 is Maou)
Alternatively, 7e2980 is the ram address for the first PC. (in fact, I wrote an article that appears on the compendium that uses this address extensively.)
Change either one of those after the "Frog: Magus!" line and wa-la.

The thing is, if you'd actually 'looked everywhere' for info about this, you would have found this. It really bugs me when people have big claims like yours ("the final two codes I've listed above affect how many people are in your party at once. This is something that no one's discovered how to do until now") but don't do enough research, especially when you don't even know what one of your codes does ("c0102cda (???)"). I'm not trying to be mean, but please be a little more humble.

I don't think anyone's made a public way to do this because, honestly, it's a pretty pointless thing to spend time on. Of course, hacking a video game to start with is pretty pointless. =)

In conclusion, enjoy a shot of Maou with Crono's pallette when I had him fight himself at the cape:

My apologies then...looks like someone else is way ahead.

Had I found some of these resources it would've taken much less time to pull this off.  Unfortunately I didn't--and after 2 hours of searching on the Internet I had assumed the info wasn't available.

Anyways, the offsets guide that you link to here on the Compendium did make this possible, and without it I wouldn't have been able to:
(1) Change the storyline counter to the proper point, at least as quickly as I did
(2) Discover the position of the RAM that affects 2nd and 3rd character positions.  I discovered on my own that "EE" = empty slot though it looks like that info might've been available after all.

Anyway, thanks for pointing this out, and I'll make sure next time I do something like this, it truly is unique.

*grumbles about 2 hours of research not being enough*

Well, I should apologize too, after rereading it. Didn't mean to come off as grumpy asshole. Erm, also, empty slot is 80, but I don't think it really matters so long as it's not a value for a character slot; the game just uses 80 by default.

Excuse me, but I recall that, in Magus' castle, the line of code that loads Magus as a Playable Character doesn't exist. I recall that the location contains LoadPC for Crono, Marle, Lucca, Robo, Ayla and (of course) Frog, but not for Magus. Does any of those codes "add" him in the list?

He's not supposed to be in your party at that point, so no, their wouldn't be a loadpc for him (this is also probably why the pallette is screwed if you try to have solo maou vs maou at the Cape, since I'm pretty certain there's a loadpc for him). None of these codes force any commands, just modify the memory that the commands work with. The PC slot codes in the RAM (7e2980 to 82) contain which characters are in which slot (1st, 2nd, 3rd), so changing the 1st to maou (who is 06) and the other two to blank (80) will effectively change what characters are where. Of course. you won't see a change until the characters are reloaded (like they are before a battle or changing maps). Many major storyline points require certain characters to be in the party for the script to execute properly. For example, if you put maou in your party only  in that whole castle sequence, when you finally go to fight him, you won't get past the 'Exchange this world for...!' line, as it is waiting for Frog to say his line. Therefore, to make it work, you'd have to have Frog in your party then remove him (by setting his pc slot to 80) after the sialogue starts, which will unload him after the battle starts.

Just a quick correction on what RyogaMasaki says above:

The game will indeed freeze at the "Exchange this world for..." line if there are not three active characters in your party.  However, none of the three characters need be Frog for the code to execute properly.  For example the particular trick I used above had Magus, Lucca, and Marle as the active party.  Frog's lines are executed just as if he were actually there, complete with the Masamune sound effects.

Incidentally, that's why the 7e2981 & 732982 codes can't be activated until the line "Frog: Magus!!" appears.
