This really isn't the place to advertise your friends' forums. I mean, it's not like we have a lot of members here as it is, and most of them probably aren't interested.

The real draw to any forums is the established community. Think economies of scale. That's why trying to get people to trickle in from other forums is pretty futile.

Building a site to go with the forums is a slightly better solution, but even then you only manage to get maybe 1-5% of the visitors to register and post. Then maybe half of those become regulars.

Considering the effort required, I'd rather spend my time getting wasted and hitting on married women, or at least finding some way to make money that doesn't involve getting a job.

Well duh Ramsus. Geez everyone knows that. I mean, who wants to have a job. Hitting on married women doesn't constitute as a job right, because then Ramsus I have the job for you!

But it is an ok community, really it is. Sure most of them are 14-19 year olds, but its still a good place to cram, and get to know people, without random people saying "My Dog Ate My Chrono Cross" or "Why does Crono have red hair? It looks like he is from Dragon Ball Z *insert obligatory lolzor joke with ones and elevens*"

That doesn't justify spamming these forums to get new members. This isn't even a good place for it.

This doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense. Everyone knows what? All that jazz about getting forum members and making websites? But then how does this mean anything about people wanting jobs? How does this relate my job as a gigolo? There's no logical flow to what you've written.

Trying to cover it up with vague implications and biteless sarcasm is a waste of words. Only amateurs do that, and only idiots are fooled by it.

Remember that a retort should fly off the page and slap a person, not fall apart and confuse them.

I admit calling it spam is a bit excessive, since it's just one thread, but that doesn't make it any better. Most of the forums I used to frequent would have banned the poster and locked the thread within minutes.

Anyway, I'm against locking threads, and this discussion has nothing to do with moderating. Blatant, unwarranted solicitations aren't against the rules (yet...?). They're just incredibly annoying on so many levels -- always have been. That's why so many businesses don't allow solicitors.

A slightly more subversive, but generally more interesting and effective way is to start a discussion about what forums you visit and why, or why you don't visit forums. If someone else also frequents your favorite forum, you can do a few cheers for it. Throw in a few anecdotes, and always have a link in your sig... You might generate quite a bit of interest.

And who knows? Maybe you'll find another forum you like even better than the one you were trying to get other people to join.

Oh, and just because I'm an admin here doesn't mean I moderate the forums. I shouldn't and don't. It's such a low-level, involved job with so little tangible reward that I wouldn't even want to.

Besides, I made my point. If it fails to get through, then it must be a problem on the other end.

Carry on.

I draw lots of pictures while making false promises to Zeality that a new layout or technical feature is coming.

But really, do a whois lookup on chronocompendium.com. That's me.

I handle the technical/design aspects of the site -- usually after they become problems -- and I periodically make complete backups of the site. Have been since day one. These days I also have to pay for hosting, but it's dirt cheap and a lot less time consuming than maintaining a dedicated server.

So yeah, you can blame me for the current "hacked together" nature of the site, along with the current pastel barnyard design. I have something of an "anti-gamer" ethos that prevents me from making a typical-looking gaming site.

Are you sure? Officially, I'm just another jobless college student with no real income. That's all I'll say about that.

Fair enough. I spent a few years doing that, myself.
