Salute your shorts; classic Nick
« on: January 16, 2006, 11:24:18 am »
Anyone else a nostalgic fan of the old Nickelodeon? Pete & Pete, Salute your Shorts, the original four Nicktoons, etc. on every board I've come across, old Nick pops up every few months or so and everyone has a big nostalgia party and then starts demanding DVDs.

Anyway, the real purpose of this thread: Michael Bower, who played Donkeylips on SYS, has his own blog now.

He uploaded a blooper reel of season one, and is currently looking for season two, which someone borrowed. If you can't get them to download, I'm going to upload them to herograw later today anyway.

Ha, no kidding?!

Pete and Pete, by the way, was one of the most intelligent and clever kids' shows ever made.

Of all the "live-action" shows Nick had in the early 90's, I think Hey, Dude, had a slight edge over Salute your shorts.  Only a slight one.

I never liked "Hey, Dude", but I loved "Salute Your Shorts".

For those who wanted the outtakes:

It's funny how much Danny Cooksey curses. I wonder if he really fit the Budnick role in real life.

I hope Michael Bower finds season two.

Because of Salute Your Shorts, I developed a deep, passionate love of salami. Otherwise the show didn't always do much for me...but I've always remember the puzzle episode. I've never had the patience to try doing one upside-down.

I always liked Are You Afraid Of The Dark. I really want that to be released on DVD or something...

I have never agreed with any of you posts more than this one.

Although, I liked Pete and Pete more when it was three-minute space-filler in-between other Nick shows.  Not to say the series proper wasn't great, but the shorts were freaking awesome.

True useless fact about Silvercry:  After developing a childish crush on Ellen (old Pete's ‘girlfriend’) her character became the archetype for all the girls I would like/date in the future, up to and including my wife.

What were the original 4 Nicktoons? They have all started to run together in my memory.

By the by, does anyone remeber Pinwheel?  Or better yet, The Mysterious Cities of Gold?

Rin and Stimpy was one of them...  I'm afraid to say anymore, because the early ones DO blend together.

The only Salute Your Shorts episode I remmber was that Water Balloon war they had.

Well, there were others, but there was one time in which there were only four Nicktoons. Rugrats, Doug, Rocko's Modern Life and something else, i think.

Rocko wasn't one of the original Nick Toons. I'm almost sure there were only the three: Ren and Stimpy, Rugrats, and Doug. (Each classic in its own way!) At first they were produced by MTV and distributed through Nickelodeon, as I recall.

If you're talking about the original Snick lineup, there were Clarissa Explains it All, Roundhouse, Ren and Stimpy, and Are You Afraid of the Dark. I hated Ren and Stimpy; I could never get into it. But it's hard to deny how much of a classic it was. Just not my taste. Who can forget LOG ?!

It's better than bad -- it's good!

Ren and Stimpy (seems I was spelling it wrong) was the best Nicktoon ever, looking back.  I also liked the Angry Beavers, although that wasn't one of the original.

I think Rocko came in the second batch of Nicktoons.

Doug was always my favorite. The theme song was what got me started into Beat Boxing before I knew what it was, and it was a great show anyway. I sure miss it...

Well, my memory is recalling a block of four Nicktoons that Nick started running every saturday or sunday morning. This is when I really audited the nicktoons, since soon after a bunch of crap flooded in under the Nicktoon label.

Nick Jr. was hilarious; I can remember watching a couple shows. One was about the Gnomes, and I used to remember the show's name; it was very placid and beautiful. The other was about muppets in a caste or something.

I think you're refering to David The Gnome and Eureka’s Castle.  David The Gnome was among the first cartoons that I remember seeing that didn’t try to dumb down the plot for its audience.  Rather refreshing, actually.

Didn’t Like Eureka’s Castle that much.  I may have been too old for it already, but I couldn’t help but feel it was a rip off of Fraggle Rock.

Rocko's Modern Life > Anything on Nickelodeon today.  That means you, Spongebob.
